Sugar imbalances linked to Alzheimer's disease
Much research has focused on the causes of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). With estimates suggesting that 16 million Americans will have Alzheimer’s by the year 2050, it is imperative that we pay more attention to this threatening onslaught. It is becoming more apparent that AD is tightly linked to glucose metabolism issues in the brain and body, to the extent that some researchers have nicknamed Alzheimer’s disease “Type 3 Diabetes.”

COUNTY: Fee or tax?
I recently asked a county commissioner about the illegal fee the county commissioners allow the aquifer protection district to levy against most of the property in the county. I explained how the fee isn’t reasonably related to a service provided to each property, and that because the money collected is used for a public benefit, it is actually a tax that they call a fee. Their biggest problem is that they can’t collect a tax, because the state law that allows an aquifer protection district prohibits the collection of a tax.
Finding wine on vacation
Mary and I just returned from a bit of time off, we were fortunate enough to be vacationing in some relatively remote islands. We were joined by friends and family and had all gone together on a condominium rental that afforded us the chance to have some of our meals prepared there. Well, as these things go, tough to have a nice dinner at “home” without some wine to go with it. The trick for all wine consumers though is finding wine when away from our “home base” that we will like and fits within our budgets. Even when travelling domestically you can still face challenges when looking for your favorites.

Most of us will never have the opportunity to deliver commencement addresses so I asked friends what words of wisdom they would impart to the Class of 2017 and there were some great answers which I’ll share here. It was interesting that from those who graduated decades ago that kindness and doing the right thing were a predominant theme. Food Allergies matter of life or death
Food Allergy Awareness Week took place May 14 — 20. That week may be over, but for those who live with food allergies or care for someone who does, are aware every week of the year. For them, it could mean life or death. Although any food can cause allergic reactions, the most common culprits are milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts (walnuts, almonds, pecans, etc.) wheat, soy, crustacean shellfish (shrimp, crab, lobster, etc.) and fish — also known as the “Big 8.”
Honor the fallen with our actions
As we head into the first three-day weekend of the upcoming summer season, it’s good to remember why Memorial Day is observed. In 1868, it was known as Decoration Day, a day to decorate the graves of Civil War soldiers. Now it commemorates American war dead through the generations.
To Som or not to Som
Sommelier, a word and a role that a few years back not many of us paid much attention to has now taken on a spot in popular culture that is astonishing to many of us. It has spawned books, mini-series and even movies about the arduous task of becoming a master sommelier. For those that pursue the designation, and there are many right now, it is a huge commitment of time and money. Many who start down the path view it as a sort of ticket to future riches and rewards working in the wine business. Is it though?

Conservatives want lower taxes, less regulation, and free market capitalism which creates an environment where individuals choose their own path and fulfill their own dreams and destinies. That is the recipe that built the greatest nation, in a short 241 years, the world has ever seen.

Home sales expected to remain strong
All the news from our industry tells us our current level of activity is expected to sustain itself through next year. For the fifth consecutive week, mortgage interest rates have hovered around 4 percent. This provides some security to those buyers who have qualified for home loans but are having difficulty finding the home they want to invest in. Many fear a spike in interest rates could put them in a position where they would qualify for less house.

ELECTION: Consolidation alternative
I read Senator Souza’s reasoning for election consolidation in the May 18 Coeur d’Alene Press article “Dismal turnout rekindles bill talk.” With the big money, often outside money, that is spent on November elections, it is unwise to move our local elections to November. It would be prohibitively expensive for local candidates and, as mentioned in your article, would also lead to voter fatigue: too many candidates to research. With work and family schedules, it is already difficult to educate oneself adequately before making a wise voter decision.

POT: Higher costs ahead
There’s much discussion on recreational marijuana as more and more states vote to make it legal. Can any good come from this? I think not. Why would any rational person want to smoke something that causes them to look stupid, act strange, and be obnoxious, unhealthy and spacey? Oh, I know, it’s THEIR bodies and they can choose to do whatever they please! It’s kind of like a woman’s “right to choose” — it’s HER body and she demands the right to take her baby’s life. Amazingly, both are legal but it makes no sense to me at all. Maybe I’m getting old or maybe I’m the stupid one. Let’s think a moment: Would ANY employer knowingly hire a person who smokes marijuana? If they do, how could they possibly use them anywhere to do anything? Let’s take this a little further — could marijuana usage lead to meth or cocaine or whatever else is more desirable? YEP! Now, a bit further, if nobody will hire them and their parents’ money runs out and their health deteriorates, what now?

A parasite is an organism that lives on another organism — animal, fish, bird, human — anything with blood (referred to as a host), and benefits by sucking the nutrients out for their own benefit, but at the expense of the host. In a derogatory meaning, it is someone who exploits others, relying on them to support them, but gives nothing in return. We may well know of a person who could be considered in this light. In the world of parasites, this is also true.

We have eight in the District: Athol, Harrison, Hayden, Pinehurst, Post Falls, Rathdrum, Spirit Lake, and our bookmobile. Each and every one has its own personality and is beloved in its community. We encompass 1,150 square miles and serve about 101,000 residents.

What I will drink this spring
The most common question from readers and customers alike is “What is your favorite wine to drink?” A variation on the question is “If you only had one bottle to drink what would it be?” Both are unanswerable for me. The truth of the matter is there are many wines I enjoy so to narrow down to a bottle or even a varietal, or for that matter even a color is nearly impossible. Here are some of my favorites so far this spring though.

Farmer's market fun
Swing into summer by heading to your local farmer’s market! The farmer’s market is an excellent way to support local farmers, get nutritious and delicious seasonal foods, make cooking fun, and be a champion for sustainability and the farm to table movement. Knowing where your food actually comes from can be empowering in terms of your personal health and the environment in which we live. Chatting with the vendor where you buy your food can be an educational experience, and local farmers are often happy to share their farming techniques and practices used in crop and livestock production. Although healthy foods are often perceived as more expensive, the farmer’s market often offers equal or lower prices than competing supermarkets. In addition, the Kootenai County Farmer’s Market accepts food stamps dollars. Stock up on locally seasonal produce right now, such as leafy greens, asparagus, beets, carrots, fresh herbs, onions, radishes and rhubarb.

CONSERVATIVES: Feel the blade yet?
I’ve just learned that one of the very last conservative shows on TV, “Last Man Standing,” has been pulled for no particular reason. Of course, there’s a reason; word is that it was too conservative for ABC. I guess it falls in the category of the “Trump Deplorables.” If that’s the case, I understand. Who wants to listen to a show that portrays a solid Christian family with conservative values and loves guns? When I read the article and entered my opinion I thought a good title would be, “Don’t blame the progressives, blame us... the conservatives.” See below.
LEFT: Aiding the Russians
Russia has been stellar in their goal to create confusion and conflict in the U.S.A. media and government. It is almost embarrassing to see how the left media and Democratic politicians have played into the hand of Russia by endlessly focusing on the Russian intervention during the Trump election even though it has already been clarified that Russia’s intervention had no impact on the results of the election. Even Fox News is sucked into these never-ending attacks by the left on anything Trump.

SCARCELLO: Failed duties
In January, highway district candidate Laurin Scarcello was removed by the state of Idaho from his position as watermaster for Water District 95c in Twin Lakes. He had failed to keep basic required records like how much water was delivered to water rights holders, and his statements during the removal proceedings showed an outrageous disdain for the expectation that he follow the laws his position was charged with administering. Additionally, it appears that he was using his position to benefit some of his friends and their farms downstream, while depleting the water level of the lake. Lastly, he told the newspaper that the state instructed him to tell people that he wasn’t provided adequate training. The fact is, the state provides a handbook for watermaster.

A slow start
The 2017 grape growing year is under way across the appellations of the Western U.S., and the consensus is, it is a slow start. As it turns out most of the wine grape producing regions had just as much precipitation and just as many dreary cold days as we have had here in North Idaho. Combined with below normal temperatures throughout the west this past winter and we are seeing some mild concern about the size of crop as the year gets started.
Snacks, to eat or not to eat
Like almost everything in life, snacking has opposing views. One person may say that snacking is a good way to keep your body fueled while another maintains that snacks add extra calories you don’t need. Well, what is the verdict? The truth is, it depends on a few variables. The type of snack, when you snack, and why you are snacking are just a few of the factors. Snacking can help manage blood sugars and keep energy up to finish the work day. Snacks can also help you cut back on giant portions at meals. However, they can also add a lot of calories if portions aren’t monitored or if the snack choices aren’t healthy.
The stressful truth about stress

Buyers should give careful consideration when choosing an agent to represent them in the buying process. When dealing with the most important investment of your life you want a strong advocate rather than someone who merely shows you houses and encourages you to buy. What's in a label?
Applying labels to things can be good and it can be bad. The labeling of nutritional guidelines on food packaging is critical if we want to turn around poor nutrition in the U.S. This idea was first discussed on the federal level back in 1969 and voluntary nutrition labeling started in the 1970s.

PET: An unnecessary death
My Elle girl is dead. My heart is broken. When I think of her, my eyes swell and I start to cry. She died this past Wednesday of Congestive Heart Failure. I had just returned home from an appointment with a different vet. She got as far as inside the front door, laid down and died. I had all this medication to start her on, and it was too late. My best friend lay on the floor gasping for breath. My wife and I have not stopped crying.

Yes, people displayed emotion when expressing concerns over legislative actions — or lack thereof — at state and federal levels. Yes, there were some raised voices — principally in response to condescending, disparaging behaviors of Malek and Souza. Most of the Town Hall proceeded without sturm and drang, but Malek and Souza are responsible for what there was. They demanded respect but failed to treat constituents with the respect they demanded for themselves.

But if you don't exercise, your body gets out of shape, muscles lose their conditioning, and your pain actually increases because your body is not functioning as well as it could.
