Lake City girls eke out regional title

| May 13, 2017 12:31 AM

5A/4A

LEWISTON — Lake City’s girls got the points they needed in the final event, just enough to edge Coeur d’Alene for the 5A regional title at the 5A and 4A Region 1 track meets which concluded Friday at Lewiston High’s Vollmer Bowl.

Lake City totaled 89 1/2 points for its first regional title since 2006. Coeur d’Alene, which had won the last six regional titles, was second with 89.

Lake City led by 4 1/2 points heading into the 1,600-meter relay. The Timberwolves needed to finish at least third and they did, easily, ahead of Lewiston. Coeur d’Alene won the race.

“It was a little bit of a surprise,” Lake City coach Kelly Reed said of the team title. “We didn’t have a ton of firsts, but we had a lot of solid efforts across the board.”

Coeur d’Alene won the boys regional title for the first time since 2013, finishing 2 1/2 points ahead of Lewiston, the two-time defending regional champ.

In the girls meet, Bridget Rieken won the 400, Kinsey Freeman the 100 hurdles for Lake City. Freeman also stepped in for the injured Klaire Mitchell and ran a leg on the deciding 1,600 relay.

Lake City’s other two wins came Thursday in the throws at Coeur d’Alene High, from Emily Hernandez (shot put) and Keara Simpson (discus).

“Emily and the whole throws crew was fantastic,” Reed said.

Anna Drapeau’s “huge” PR to get third in the 800 was also big, Reed said.

Taryn Horvath of Coeur d’Alene won the 100 and 200 and ran on two winning relays.

In the boys meet, Zac Magee won the 200 and 400, and ran on a winning relay.

In the 4A meet, Lakeland won the girls regional title for the first time since 2011. Moscow won its second straight boys title.

Summer Kastning led the Lakeland girls, winning the high jump and both hurdles races.

In the boys meet, David Moruzzi of Lakeland won the 100 and 200, and ran on a winning relay.

The state 5A and 4A meets are next Friday and Saturday at Dona Larsen Park in Boise.
