SPIRIT LAKE — A 37-year-old Spirit Lake man was arrested on Thursday for allegedly kicking his wife in the head and attempting to run her over.

Bobby Hobbs-Schulke, who was on probation for a previous domestic case, was booked into the Kootenai County jail on charges of aggravated assault and domestic battery.

"(The victim) claims she was kicked in the head by the suspect and, when we got there, she had abrasions on her forehead and scrapes from when she apparently fell down," Spirit Lake Police Chief Keith Hutcheson said.

"She proceeded to say that, when he was backing out of the driveway, she thought she was going to get ran over, so she threw a bowl of cereal and milk at the car."

Hutcheson said when she reportedly jumped out of the way of the vehicle, she fell to the ground and shortly thereafter is when the suspect allegedly kicked her.

The chief said evidence at the scene, including tire marks and the cereal, is consistent with the woman's testimony.

"She was able to quickly jump out of the way (from the vehicle)," Hutcheson said. "She believed he was trying to run her over."

A medical unit responded to the home to evaluate the victim, but she declined to be transported to the hospital.

Officer Ben Kirkendall responded to the home on Adams Street in Spirit Lake around 8 a.m.

"He brought some level-headedness to a contentious situation," Hutcheson said.

The incident was first reported by a third party, followed by the victim, Hutcheson said.

After the incident, Hobbs-Schulke drove to his employer in Hayden, where he was detained by a Kootenai County Sheriff's Office deputy. Kirkendall then transported the suspect to jail and booked him.

Hutcheson said police have responded to the home multiple times for domestic calls.

"We take these kinds of situations real seriously," Hutcheson said. "We can't have this going on."

Hutcheson said the suspect told police the couple had an argument Wednesday night. The chief said accusations were reportedly made against each other.

Hutcheson said domestic violence victims are encouraged to seek help as soon as possible.
