Lake City girls nab regional title

| May 9, 2017 2:00 AM

LEWISTON — Senior Emily Dodge earned medalist honors to lead Lake City’s girls win their first 5A Region 1 golf championship since 2001 on Monday at the Lewiston Country Club.

Dodge shot 86 and the Timberwolves totaled 390, nine strokes better than second-place Post Falls.

Both teams qualified for state next Monday and Tuesday at Teton Lake Golf Course in Rexburg.

“She just played great golf today,” Lake City girls coach Corey Owen said. “It (the regional title) is a testament to the kids. We’ve had the worst weather ever this spring. They’ve never complained, never whined, and it paid off for them.”

Kyla Currie of Lake City shot 99 and tied for fourth overall.

Savanna Routh of Post Falls was second with a 92, teammate Renee Mosby was third with a 97 and teammate Maddie Anderton-Graham tied for fourth with a 99.

Post Falls’ boys won the regional title. Coeur d’Alene, led by medalist Chase Mitchell’s 74, finished second, four strokes back and earned the region’s second berth to state.

Post Falls shot 325, led by junior Tanner Byers, who finished third overall with a 79.

“Almost every one of them struggled today,” Post Falls coach Maria Kostina said. “It was really tough conditions. Everybody really struggled with putting — lots of three-putts. It wasn’t fun to see them struggle, but it was fun to see them do the best with what they had, and not let it affect them.”

Davon Sandford of Lake City also qualified for state on the boys side, finishing fourth with an 80.
