To the loving givers of life

| May 14, 2017 1:00 AM

Today we joyfully and sadly share two compelling but different stories.

One is the celebration of motherhood, a tribute to the person who brings us into the world, kisses owies, hugs away sorrows and sometimes holds families together through sheer will and pure love.

The other is the beginning of a three-part series on mental health and suicide, timed to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Month. Rather than an affront to motherhood, it’s our hope that focusing on mental health today and for three consecutive Sundays will help spare individuals and families untold pain, including the ultimate loss, which is children dying before their parents.

So with tears slipping down salty trails toward smiles, we salute mothers, nurturers yet unquestioned leaders of the family. Doubt that? Well, we found 10 traits that good mothers and good leaders share, according to a sweetly named website called Mom.me:

1. They have a positive attitude.

2. They exhibit creativity.

3. They have an ability to inspire.

4. They have a sense of loyalty.

5. They have all. The. Patience.

6. They take responsibility.

7. They have determination.

8. They’re trustworthy.

9. They have serious communication skills.

10. They practice and promote honesty.

To mothers everywhere: Thank you. We wouldn’t be here without you.
