Two years later

COEUR d’ALENE — On the second anniversary of Coeur d’Alene Police Sgt. Greg Moore’s death, attorneys for the man accused of killing him will argue that an impartial jury can’t be found in Kootenai County.

Jonathan Renfro, a 26-year-old Rathdrum resident who allegedly admitted to shooting Moore in a Coeur d'Alene neighborhood on May 5, 2015, faces the death penalty if found guilty. Kootenai County District Court Judge Lansing Haynes will hear arguments today on motions from the prosecution and defense teams in the case, including a motion by Renfro’s attorneys to hold his jury trial in another county.

The other two motions include one from the defense team, which is asking Haynes to move the scheduled July 31 jury trial to a later date. A motion from the prosecution asks Haynes to order that Renfro’s attorneys disclose their list of expert witnesses who will be used in the trial, as well as any reports or documents related to those witnesses.

Haynes is not obligated to make a decision on any of the motions during today’s hearing. At other times during the case, Haynes has heard arguments on motions and then scheduled a separate hearing to give his rulings on them.

Moore, 43, was the first Coeur d’Alene Police officer killed in the line of duty.

He was shot after stopping a suspicious male at 1:30 a.m. on May 5, 2015, in a Coeur d’Alene neighborhood near Wilbur Avenue and Joanna Drive. Moore called in the suspect’s identification but made no further contact. A citizen heard gunshots and found Moore unconscious in the street. Moore died several hours later at Kootenai Health.

Authorities chased a suspect driving Moore’s patrol car to Post Falls. Renfro was arrested and charged after allegedly being chased on foot and found hiding under a car.
