JASON ELLIOTT/Press Examples of Ron Campbell's Beatles pop art were on display at Emerge Gallery in Coeur d'Alene over the weekend.

COEUR d’ALENE — Fab indeed.

Ron Campbell, who directed the 1960’s Saturday morning Beatles cartoon series and animated the Beatles film “Yellow Submarine,” wrapped up a three-day stay at Emerge Gallery on Sunday, displaying pieces from his years of work in the animation business.

“I got into doing this kind of work because of my retirement,” Campbell said. “I’ve made films all my life. Children’s films. And when you retire, you’ve got to do something. It’s kind of like a second gig.”

The display featured Campbell’s original Beatles cartoon paintings created specifically for the show, as well as new Beatles pop art paintings at the exhibit.

Campbell, 77, made his first visit to Coeur d’Alene for the event, which ran from Friday to Sunday at the gallery located on 4th Street.

“I only do a couple of shows a month around America,” Campbell said. “We have to work into geographic areas. We’re carrying all this artwork and taking it to different places.”

It was the first time that he’d done a show out west in a while.

“We’ve been traveling around a lot west of the Mississippi (River),” Campbell said. “We hadn’t been west much, and Coeur d’Alene is a beautiful slice west of the Mississippi.”

Campbell also displayed works from his 50-year career in cartoons, featuring works from “Scooby Doo,” “Rugrats,” “The Smurfs,” “The Flintstones,” “The Jetsons” and more.

“There has been a few that are my favorite works, and we’ve sold a few of them,” Campbell said. “But I just try to do the best I can for the subject I’ve got in front of me. I’m not unhappy with anything I’ve done. People are happy with them, and they sell, so I’m happy people like them.”
