VFW conducts Memorial Weekend poppy drive

COEUR d’ALENE — Commander Robert O. Martin of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 889, announced the VFW Memorial Day Poppy Drive Fundraiser benefiting local veterans in need will take place this weekend.

Those interested in donating to this cause are asked to do so by stopping by one of the following locations in Coeur d’Alene — Fred Meyer, Black Sheep Sporting Goods, North 40 and Super 1 Foods — between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Friday, May 26 through Monday, May 29.

“The VFW wants to extend its appreciation to the management and staff of all the supporting venues that have chosen to support this worthy cause,” said the group’s announcement of the fundraiser.

The VFW of the U.S. is the nation’s largest and oldest major war veterans organization. Founded in 1899 and chartered by Congress in 1936, the VFW is composed entirely of eligible veterans and military service members from the active, Guard and Reserve forces. With nearly 1.7 million VFW and Auxiliary members located in more than 6,500 posts worldwide, the nonprofit veterans service organization is dedicated to veterans’ service, legislative advocacy, and military and community service programs.
