COEUR d’ALENE — Kyle Manzardo went 3 for 3 and drove in five runs in the second game as the Lake City Timberwolves routed the visiting Coeur d’Alene Vikings 14-3 in five innings to complete a 5A Inland Empire League sweep Tuesday.

Lake City (11-7, 6-5 5A IEL) won the first game 5-1.

Manzardo hit an RBI double in the second inning of the second game, and belted a grand slam in the third. Manzardo hit a liner off the middle of the center field fence for a likely triple, and when the Viking outfielder slipped, Manzardo circled the bases for the inside-the-park slam.

Cameron Luckey hit a two-run double in the fourth inning for Coeur d’Alene (11-9, 3-7).

In the first game, Nathan Phillips went 2 for 3 and scored two runs for Lake City, Kodie Kolden scattered seven hits, and Bennett Cunningham provided some insurance with a two-run single to cap a three-run fifth.

“I thought we played two solid baseball games back to back,” Lake City coach Paul Manzardo said. “Kodie Kolden pitched a really good first game and Brett Stapleton matched him in the second game.

“I was also pleased we had some different guys in the batting order contribute, get some key hits in both games. Kyle swung the bat extremely well in the second game.”

With Lewiston earning the split at Post Falls on Tuesday, the seeds are set for next week’s 5A Region 1 tournament. On Monday, No. 4 seed Coeur d’Alene will travel to No. 1 Lewiston, and No. 2 seed Lake City will host No. 3 Post Falls. The winners play Tuesday for the regional title and an automatic berth to state; the eventual second-place finisher can make it to state through the play-in route.

On Thursday, Coeur d’Alene plays host to Lewiston in a makeup game at 2 p.m. After that, Coeur d’Alene plays host to Lake City in a makeup game to conclude the regular season.

Post Falls 5-0

Lewiston 3-5

POST FALLS — A sweep would have put Post Falls in position for the league title. As it was, there were some benefits to the 5A IEL split.

“The first one was big, because that kept us out of the fourth seed,” Post Falls coach Mick Zeller said. “At the end of the day, we don’t have to go to Lewiston.”

Quin Bennett scattered five hits in the opener for Post Falls (13-10, 6-6 5A IEL), and he also went 2 for 3 and drove in a pair of runs.

“Quin pitched a great game; he’s really come thorugh big for us,” Zeller said. “He’s got half our league wins.”

Julian Washburn pitched a one-hitter in the second game for Lewiston (16-6, 7-4), which clinched the top seed with the split. Wyatt Setian broke up the no-hitter with a two-out single in the sixth.
