COEUR d’ALENE — The Lake City Timberwolves rallied in both games to sweep the visiting Coeur d’Alene Vikings 5-4 and 4-3 on Tuesday to clinch the 5A Inland Empire League softball title.

Coeur d’Alene (10-8, 6-4 5A IEL) led 3-0 in the first game before Lake City (15-1, 10-0) scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Bailey Cavanagh’s two-run single brought Lake City to within a run. Olivia Zufelt single, and Emma Gray’s single tied the game. With Zufelt at third, Jalyssa Beamer dropped down a sacrifice bunt. She was retired at first, but Zufelt dashed home on the throw, and when the ball got away on the throw home, Gray scored as well.

“We finally strung some hits together,” Lake City coach Jesse Lenz said. “I really have to tip my hat to how hard Coeur d’Alene played and battled in the first game. Natalie (Sell) pitched a great ballgame (for the Vikings), but I cannot be more proud of my team for how they battled and fought through adversity to do the little things to win.”

In the second game, Kaylin Donovan’s two-run homer in the top of the sixth put Coeur d’Alene up 3-1.

In the bottom of the inning, RBI singles by Zufelt and Gray tied the game. With Gray at second, Beamer lined a single to center field. Gray was held at third, but when the ball was misplayed in the outfield, Gray raced home with the go-ahead run.

“Could not be more proud of Jalyssa Beamer for coming up with the big hit to give us the lead,” Lenz said.

The teams will meet again Thursday at Coeur d’Alene High, finishing up the first game of a doubleheader suspended by rain last Tuesday, then playing the second game to wrap up the regular season.
