DISCOURSE: A better way

| May 5, 2017 1:00 AM

The definition of civil discourse is conversation intended to enhance understanding. Unfortunately, opportunities for civil discourse was not fully realized at the May 1 Town Hall Meeting held at North Idaho College. Let’s hope for a change in the future.

One thing that was not mentioned in the opinion piece “Anger Trumps Issues at NIC” was the heart-breaking and beautiful letter that was read by a well-known woman in the community about her experience with the health coverage gap in our state. I hope her prepared words had a compassionate effect on our elected officials.

Shortly after is when the shouts of anger seemed to take over, with some people not being satisfied with Sen. Mary Souza’s response. I left the town hall meeting not long after that.

Anger and fear are natural, and oftentimes, necessary emotions for our survival. However, rarely do these powerful emotions bring out the best in us. The recipients of our anger often do not hear us any better and we miss opportunities for true cooperation.

I do not wish to condemn the anger my fellow citizens may feel, as often there is great justification. However, I think it’s time to explore non-violent communication and civil discourse as tools for social change.

In this ideological civil war, where words and images are used as weapons to shame and degrade, I choose to be a conscientious objector, willing to work for better peace and understanding.
