COEUR d’ALENE — Kodie Kolden’s RBI single with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the No. 2 seed Lake City Timberwolves to a 5-4 victory over the No. 3 Post Falls Trojans in the first round of the 5A Region 1 baseball tournament.

Benji White led off the inning by reaching on an error. Will Mayo ran for him, and was sacrificed to second by Nathan Phillips. Kolden singled to right field to score Mayo with the winning run.

“We did just enough to win,” Lake City coach Paul Manzardo said. “Post Falls played really good defense early on. We had some balls in the gap that they ran down. Cameron McKeown in center field and Brock Zeller in left field made some nice plays in the gap.”

Lake City (12-8) will travel to No. 1 seed Lewiston (17-6) today at 4 p.m. for the regional championship and a berth to state next week in Boise. Lewiston edged No. 4 seed Coeur d’Alene 3-2 on Monday in Lewiston.

Post Falls (13-11) will play host to Coeur d’Alene (12-10) today at 4 in a loser-out game.

RBI singles by Quin Bennett and Jacob Rutherford helped stake Post Falls to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third.

In the fifth, Bridger Rinaldi singled in a run for Lake City, and Bennett Cunningham’s two-run single tied it at 3.

McCabe Compton doubled to lead off the bottom of the sixth, and scored on Kyle Manzardo’s single to put the T-Wolves up 4-3.

Wyatt Setian of Post Falls singled in Nate Buer with nobody out in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 4.

“What I like about this group is they just battle,” Paul Manzardo said. “We didn’t play our best defensive game (committing five errors), but the thing is, they battled through all that adversity.”

Lewiston took three of four from Lake City during 5A Inland Empire League play.
