Prairie wins, but won't advance

| May 29, 2017 2:00 AM

POST FALLS — Wyatt Setian hit a two-run double to highlight a five-run sixth inning, and the Prairie Cardinals held on to beat the Spokane Crew 18U 10-9 at the Prairie Memorial Day tournament Sunday at Post Falls High.

Post Falls went 3-1 in its season-opening tourney, but missed out on today’s championship round on the tiebreaker of fewest runs allowed. The Expos and Crew both allowed fewer runs, and only the top two teams from the Cardinals’ pool advanced.

Matt Fleming allowed two runs and struck out three in 5 1/3 innings for Prairie.

“He really competed hard for the win,” Prairie coach Pat Call said. “He kept them off balance and made them put it in play so we could play some defense. I was very pleased with his toughness.”

Prairie opens AA North Idaho League play on Thursday vs. Coeur d’Alene at 6 p.m. at Thorco Field.
