Lums finish tourney with loss

| May 30, 2017 1:00 AM

MISSOULA, Mont. — The learning experience continued on Monday for the young Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen, who fell to the Missoula Mavericks 12-4 in six innings at the Dale Dahlgren Memorial Day Tournament at Osprey Field.

Justin Bates and Brett Keesee each had two hits for the Lums.

Coeur d’Alene coach Kevin Dunton said Cody Davenport pitched well enough to win, but the defense let him down. “We just need to give him better support,” Dunton said. “We started out playing well this tournament, but with a thin roster, our youngsters made too may errors and extended innings. It is somethig we can work from.”

Two of the teams Coeur d’Alene lost to earlier in the tourney — Great Falls and Vauxhall — were playing in the championship on Monday evening.

The Lumbermen (2-3) host the Prairie Cardinals on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Thorco Field in Ramsey Park.
