Spirit Lake man injured in I-90 crash

| May 6, 2017 12:00 AM

Idaho State Police believe a pothole on Interstate 90 near Rose Lake prompted an accident which injured a 72-year-old Spirit Lake man and reduced traffic to one lane in each direction for three hours Friday afternoon.

Dale Duncan was transported to Kootenai Health, then taken to Sacred Heart in Spokane, after his 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck was struck head-on in the westbound lanes of I-90 at milepost 33, police reported.

A yellow 2008 GMC Savana van driven by Michael Kottas, 34, of Missoula, Mont., was traveling east on I-90 at 1:30 p.m. when it struck a large pothole, causing a tire to blow out, police reported. This caused the van to swerve into the westbound lanes, where it struck Duncan’s vehicle.

Kottas suffered minor injuries and was not transported by medical personnel, police reported. Details on Duncan’s injuries were unavailable Friday night.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts in the crash, which police said remains under investigation.
