TRANSIT: Great way to go

I am surprised at the opposition to the proposed transit center in Riverstone. I can see great potential for it as an added revenue producer.

I attended one university in a triple university system divided by a river between the states. I lived on one side and attended the school on the other, having reciprocity. I originally drove to campus but eventually found it more convenient to ride the bus, dropping me off directly at the campus. It was also more expedient to ride the bus to the shopping area of the city. Professors and students alike utilized the system for its convenience, along with the general public.

I can visualize another venue for a number of merchants, from espresso cafes to small retail establishments. Riders would be able to browse, get a latte or other beverage while they await their bus.

As far as crime goes, if the police don’t seem to be concerned about an increase, why should those who are? And the proposed cost is more than reasonable. When I rode I bought a monthly pass that was significantly cheaper than maintaining an automobile.

As far as the Republican Central Committee and their resolution urging county commissioners to suspend planned construction of the center, I imagine it is because they never intend to utilize the system. Good for them.

An effective mass transit system is a sign of a progressive city working to effectively move its inhabitants to and from their destinations. Build it and they will come.
