Village at Orchard Ridge elects new board members

The Village at Orchard Ridge recently held its annual meeting and elected four new members to its board of directors. Agreeing to serve three-year terms were Warren Bakes, Kathy Helbling, Linda Scharnhorst and Kim Sitton.

Bakes is a longtime educator, administrator, and consultant in Coeur d’Alene. With several years as coordinator of student placement at University of Idaho, Bakes is also well known for his leadership as superintendent of schools and as principal and director of several schools and services within the Coeur d’Alene School District. In addition, Bakes was the resource conservation manager for Washington Water Power for six years and has served on countless state and local boards including as elder at First Presbyterian Church in Coeur d’Alene. He is married to Linda and they have three adult children.

Helbling has lived in Coeur d’Alene for 27 years. She loves spending time with her two sons, Brett and Brandon, and two grandchildren. She is a graduate of the University of Idaho and holds a master’s in education. She has taught at Holy Family Catholic School for 20 years, as a first-grade teacher, and currently as the Title I reading teacher. She has served on various committees at Holy Family, St. Pius X Catholic Church, and volunteers at Orchard Ridge with the Girl’s Club.

Scharnhorst was born and raised in Idaho, and has been a resident of Coeur d’Alene for the past 38 years. She graduated from the University of Idaho with degrees in Elementary Education and Special Education. Scharnhorst was an elementary school teacher for 17 years, taught several education courses for the University of Idaho, and spent her last five years of teaching at Holy Family Catholic School before retiring in 2007. She and her husband, Jim, raised their two sons in Coeur d’Alene and now have four grandchildren. She has been actively involved in the local community by serving on numerous boards and committees.

Sitton moved with her husband from Texas to Coeur d’Alene in 2016. Since arriving, she has become licensed to sell real estate in Idaho and joined Lakeshore Realty. Sitton spent five years as operations manager for a nonprofit trade association in Texas, six years as office manager at Trinity Lutheran Church, and 17 years managing physician practices and a hospital admissions department. Sitton has always felt it was important to give back to the community where she lives and has volunteered or served as a board member for several organizations. She currently serves on the Community Outreach Committee for the Cd’A Association of Realtors and is participating in this year’s Leadership Cd’A program.

“We are privileged to have Warren, Kathy, Linda and Kim join the board,” said Kent Green, director of development at Orchard Ridge. “Their experience and insight will be an asset to Orchard Ridge.”

Sponsored by 20 area churches, The Village at Orchard Ridge is uniquely equipped to care for the physical, mental, social and spiritual needs of its assisted living and Alzheimer’s/dementia residents. Its mission, spanning 96 years, is to provide a faith-based, loving home that honors older adults.
