Laurence ‘Larry’ D. Hartzog, P.E., 76

Laurence “Larry” D. Hartzog, P.E., passed away peacefully May 5, 2017, at the Schneidmiller House in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

He is survived by his college sweetheart and wife of 54 years, Jane; sister Marilyn; sons Gregory (Josetta) and Timothy (Sherrill); and grandchildren Arionne (Waylon) and Zackery.

Larry earned a B.S. in metallurgical engineering from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and an M.S. in metallurgical engineering from the Nevada MacKay School of Mines. He then joined the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corp. His initial USPHS assignment was monitoring underground nuclear testing in Nevada. He had a lengthy career as a metallurgist and was a member of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers. He was a recipient of the prestigious Robert H. Richards Award for Mining. Throughout his career, he focused primarily on precious metals production at such mines as OK Tedi, Candelaria and Coeur d’Alene mines Rochester in Nevada. He had his own international consulting practice.

As a DeMolay, he proceeded to a 33rd Degree Mason and Scottish Rite. After an early life passion for driving sprint cars in southern California, he became an enthusiastic fan of anything NASCAR. He was a competitive skeet shooter, earning more than 130,000 registered targets with numerous awards throughout the years.

During his final days with us, the staff and volunteers at the Hospice House provided compassionate and valuable care that assisted the family during this critical life event. The Hartzog family would like to thank them for all their care, compassion and advice during this time.
