BOISE — Coeur d’Alene High baseball coach Nick Mahin believed his team was slighted when Lewiston opted to not finish out the regular season on the Vikings’ diamond.

At that point, the Bengals had already wrapped up the league title and the seeds were set for the district tournament, rendering the regular-season finale pointless.

The Vikings didn’t forget when the two league rivals met Saturday at Capital High in the fourth-place game of the 5A state baseball tournament.

Behind the arm of Daniel Gunnerson and a spotless defense, Coeur d’Alene downed the Bengals 5-2, completing a season in which placed fourth in its own league before placing fourth in its classification.

Gunnerson struck out seven hitters and gave up six hits in six innings of work. Defensively, the Vikings didn’t commit a single error.

“We didn’t appreciate them not coming up to play us,” Mahin said. “And we wanted them to know that. This was the first time all year we put together a perfect game.”

Trevor Luckey’s 2-RBI double in the fifth inning helped break open a game Mahin likened to an IEL championship.

Coeur d’Alene, which went 1-2 against the Bengals during the regular season, finished the season at 17-11.

BOISE — Senior Drew Zaken went 3 for 3 with a home run and two runs scored for the Hawks in a loss to the Falcons of Caldwell in the consolation title game of the state 4A tourney at Bishop Kelly High.

JJ Mackesy had two hits for Lakeland (12-10).

“We just couldn’t get over the hump today,” Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. “I liked the matchup and thought we had a good chance of winning. We hit the ball solidly, but we just couldn’t put that good defensive game together collectively. Anytime you give up five errors and some mental mistakes in a trophy game, it’s hard to come out of it with a win.”

ONTARIO, Ore. — A 13-run fifth inning doomed the Tigers in the fourth-place game of the Idaho 3A state baseball tournament at Treasure Valley Community College.

Timberlake, which led 12-3 after four innings, fell into a buzzsaw against the Redskins, who took advantage of 12 walks.

Jack McDonald and Ryan Stevens each had three hits for Timberlake and Dustin Smith had two doubles for Timberlake (9-10), which tallied 16 hits.

“Not a lot of people gave us a chance to do anything at the state tournament,” Timberlake coach Cameron Knigge said. “So to be within a few outs of bringing home hardware is a big accomplishment.”

ONTARIO, Ore. — The Badgers jumped out to a 9-0 lead after two innings, but 14 walks eventually did them in in a loss to the Grizzlies in the state 3A championship game at Treasure Valley Community College.

“It’s a heartbreaker to be up 9-0 and lose the strike zone,” said Bonners Ferry coach Tom Turpin, whose Badgers (20-4) were making their first appearance in the title game in school history. We were down 18-11, and got it back to 19-16. We battled, we had our chances in the sixth and seventh innings. I’m proud of the boys.”

Fruitland (22-3) won its fourth straight state title.

Seth Bateman went 3 for 5 with two RBIs, and Kaleb Stockton drove in three runs for Bonners Ferry.

In the third inning, the Badgers hit one and walked four, and all scored. In the fourth, Bonners walked 10 batters, and all scored.
