Delvan ‘Del’ Vernie Shaw, 65

Delvan “Del” Vernie Shaw passed away suddenly May 22, 2017, after suffering a heart attack while riding his bike home from work at Kaiser Aluminum. Cycling had become his latest passion and he drew great enjoyment from it.

He is survived by the love of his life, Sharon Shaw. They had just celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on May 12, 2017. He is also survived by his adult children, Jennifer Riley, her husband Terry, his grandson Rhonin and granddaughters Bronwyn and Marisa; Michael Shaw, his wife Sally; and Erica Shaw-Soper. Delvan is also survived by his fathers, Delmar Shaw, Don McCaw and stepmother Chris McCaw; sisters Connie Hazelton, her husband Rod; Linda Smith, her husband Doug; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Delvan was born on March 15, 1952, in Coeur d’Alene. He graduated Coeur d’Alene High in 1971 and enlisted in the United States Air Force from 1972-1976. From there he proceeded to obtain his journeyman electrician’s license. He worked for various sawmills in the area and finished off the last 25+ years at Kaiser Aluminum. He was so looking forward to retiring next year and spending quality time with his wife and family.

Starting in his early teens, Delvan learned his ethic for hard work while helping his father, Don, in logging activities. He learned to operate heavy machinery and chainsaws. He developed a deep passion for the great outdoors, including his hobbies of hunting, hiking, camping and exploring. He enjoyed his many trips with his father Delmar, to the Snow Peak area hunting elk with pack horses. One of his greatest joys was a successful moose hunt. A few years later, he was also able to help his father, Delmar tag a moose.

He was so proud of his children, and received great joy in seeing their accomplishments. That includes his grandson, Rhonin (15), who participates in wrestling, football and golf, which Delvan loved to watch. He was looking forward to many bicycle trips with Rhonin this summer.

Delvan was always ready and willing to help anyone in need. He was a true jack-of-all-trades and could fix just about anything. Delvan’s family, including his large extended family, was most important to him. His family will miss him, as he was a great inspiration and a solid rock for them all to lean on. He was always ready with a smile and encouraging, uplifting words. The most common phrase used to describe him by anyone who has ever met him is that he was the best man they had ever known. Such a positive influence, to know him was to love him.

His memory will live on through his children and family, our hearts, our minds and all the space in between.

There will be a celebration of life at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 27, 2017, at his daughter, Jennifer’s property, in Hayden. For information on attending please email delshawmemorial@gmail.com.
