COEUR d’ALENE — There will be a new state champion in 5A baseball this season.

Jackson Sumner drove in three runs, two with a second-inning home run, as the visiting Coeur d’Alene Vikings beat the defending champion Lake City Timberwolves 10-0 in the 5A Region 1 second-place game Thursday.

Jayce Bailey threw four shutout innings and allowed three hits for Coeur d’Alene (14-10), which advances to a state play-in game on Saturday, where the Vikings will face Mountain View (18-11) of Meridian at 1 p.m. at Lewiston’s Church Field.

Lake City finishes 12-10.

“Jayce threw a great game, and he also got us going in the first inning with the first RBI,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Mahin said. “Jackson Sumner hit a big home run ... everybody hit the ball today. One pitch at a time; it’s nice to be back.”

Sumner singled and scored in the first inning, and his two-run blast capped a four-run second. Quinton Bunch added a two-run single in a five-run fourth. Noah Mayfield was 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI.

Lake City managed just three hits off Bailey and Carter Friesz.

COEUR d’ALENE — Cheyenne Rose fired a five-hitter and Bailey Bausch doubled twice as the fourth-seeded Bengals stunned the second-seeded Vikings in a loser-out second-place game of the 5A Region 1 tournament at Larry Schwenke Field.

The Bengals qualified for a play-in game against Boise at 1 p.m. PDT Saturday at Payette, with the winner advancing to the state tournament next week at Coeur d’Alene.

Brynnan Carpenter padded a two-run lead with a two-run, two-strike single in the seventh.

“Coeur d’Alene is a great program, a great team, they always seem to play for state titles,” Lewiston coach Ike Young told the Lewiston Tribune. “It was nice to go up here and beat them in their backyard.”

Timberlake (15-3) advances to a state play-in game at 11 a.m. PDT at either Fruitland or Payette vs. the third-place team from District 3.
