Ronald E. ‘Ron’ Haviland, 86

Ronald E. “Ron” Haviland, 86, of Rathdrum, Idaho, passed quietly on May 6, 2017, at Schneidmiller Hospice House in Hayden, Idaho.

Ron was born in Spokane, Wash., on Dec. 19, 1930. His parents were Howard and Bernice Haviland of Trout Creek, Mont. Ron was raised in the Trout Creek area and graduated from Noxon High School.

Ron is survived by his wife, Carroll (Craig) Haviland; son Ervin Haviland of Polson, Mont..; son Ron Haviland and wife Patti of Rathdrum; daughter Marsha Goldman and husband Gene of Davenport, Wash.; daughter Carol Lyons and husband Denver of Castro Valley, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, Shane, Bryon, Eric, Bethany, Gabe, Becca, Daniel, Jeff, Allen, Andrea and Alicia; 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Ron enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1952. He served his country for 20 years as an automatic equipment technician. He served in places worldwide, including Alaska, Germany, Libya and Vietnam. While living in Germany in 1962, he received the “Knight of the Road” award from the city of Langdon for rescuing and saving the life of a woman, who was involved in a car accident. He married Peggy (Archer) Haviland while serving in Libya. He retired from the Air Force in 1972 and moved back to Trout Creek.

After a few years they moved to Washington state where Ron worked as an electrical contract inspector in nuclear plants for several years before retiring and moving back to his home town of Trout Creek. While in Trout Creek, Ron was very active in the community. He directed his energy toward starting the Bass Club, building city docks, initiating Kids Fishing Day in Noxon, developing of the Martin Creek Park area and dock, setting up and operating the El Basso Café for the Bass Club at the Huckleberry Festival for several years, and was active in initiating and organizing the Bass Club Fishing Tournament. They moved to North Idaho before Peggy passed in 2007.

Ron will be missed by his family. Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2017, at Rathdrum Senior Center, 8037 Montana St., Rathdrum. Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 19, 2017, at White Pine Cemetery in Trout Creek.

In lieu of flowers, Ron would have preferred donations be made to Rathdrum Senior Center, in his name, P.O. Box 508, Rathdrum, ID 83858.
