One boy was killed and another was injured in a vehicle crash Monday evening on Spirit Lake Cutoff and Peregrine Road north of Spirit Lake.

A third vehicle occupant, Jose F. Sosa Jr., 55, of Coeur d’Alene, was also injured. Idaho State Police has not released the names of the two youths involved.

ISP reports it remains unclear who was driving the vehicle, a green 1995 Subaru Legacy, when the crash occurred.

Police investigators report the driver lost control of the vehicle while traveling north on Spirit Lake Cutoff, striking several mailboxes.

“The vehicle overturned and came to rest on its top blocking the roadway for approximately six hours,” said an ISP news release.

One of the boys was ejected from the vehicle and was deceased at the scene. He was transported to Sherman and Knapp funeral home in Spirit Lake.

Sosa was transported by air ambulance to Kootenai Health, and the injured boy was transported by ground ambulance to Kootenai Health.

Next of kin have been notified and the investigation is ongoing.
