5A/4A TRAHernandez, Leonard win on first day

BOISE — Emily Hernandez didn’t get off to best of starts in the 5A girls shot put competition at Dona Larsen Park.

It was bumpy and rocky and so she made an adjustment. Not with her technique but with her mindset.

“I throw a lot better when I am more happy,” the Lake City junior said after winning the state title in the event. “I was really serious at the beginning because I was so nervous. I kind of loosened up a little bit and I got pumped.”

Hernandez was highly exuberant after the event and she was one of two local athletes who claimed a state title at Friday’s first day of the 5A and 4A track and field meets. Coeur d’Alene senior Grady Leonard also prevailed as he defended his state crown in the 5A boys shot put.

Hernandez’s winning effort of 43 feet, 2 inches represents a personal best and a new Lake City record. But such a strong performance didn’t seem likely at the outset.

She scratched two throws and another toss wasn’t all that smooth. Lake City coach Kelly Reed was mildly concerned before Hernandez picked up the pace.

“The throws weren’t Emily standards. She was off a little bit,” Reed said. “There were times in the past where Emily may have let that bother her. She’s grown up and matured so much as an athlete and a person. It is fun to see her overcome.”

Hernandez’s fifth throw was the one that earned her the state title.

It came immediately after she focused on the mental side of the equation.

“If I have a good mindset, I know I will do well,” Hernandez said. “I guess the nervousness of it was getting to me a little bit. Once I started having more fun and had a positive mindset going, it helped me a lot.”

Hernandez finished second in last year’s state meet with a toss of 38-6 3/4 so the winning throw was more than 4 1/2 feet farther.

But Reed feels she has made equally big strides away from competition.

“It could not happen to a nicer kid,” Reed said. “She works hard, she works really hard. She is an amazing young lady and has dealt with a lot of adversity. I’m so excited for her.”

Lake City teammate Keara Simpson, a junior, finished third for the second straight year with a throw of 39-4.

It wasn’t too big of a surprise that Leonard defended his crown and his winning toss of 61-5 was more than a foot better than second-place finisher Alec Kuzmack (60-4) of Eagle.

Leonard’s throw surpassed his winning toss of 60-7 1/4 in 2016 but wasn’t close to the state record of 64-9 set by Minico’s Josh Barclay in 2014.

Leonard placed his sights on that mark after claiming the state crown last season. He appeared to have a shot at approaching or breaking it after having a 67-foot throw earlier this season.

Attempts to land an interview with Leonard through Coeur d’Alene coach Justin Aguilar were unsuccessful. Aguilar indicated Leonard would speak after today’s discus competition.

Lakeland junior Whitnee Skalskiy didn’t defend her 4A girls triple jump title but her second-place finish was highly impressive under the circumstances.

Skalskiy tore the ACL in her right knee in late August playing soccer. She underwent surgery on Sept. 14 and doctors told her she wouldn’t be running for a year and that jumping was out of the question.

Those predictions didn’t hold up as Skalskiy returned to competition in late April and qualified for the state meet in both the triple jump and long jump. Her triple jump mark of 35 feet, 9 1/2 inches trailed only Bishop Kelly senior Lindsey Schmidt (37-5 1/2).

“All my doctors were ‘there is no way you’re going to be jumping’ and I’m here and I got second,” Skalskiy said. “It is kind of discouraging because I got second and I was a state champ last year but I keep having to remind myself ‘You tore your ACL eight months ago. You’re not supposed to be here.’”

Also earning medals on Friday were Coeur d’Alene junior Taylor Dawson (fourth in boys long jump at 21-7) and Post Falls junior Mackenzie Morris, who tied for fifth in the girls pole vault (10-6).

The Coeur d’Alene boys 3,200 relay team finished second (7:58.77) behind Rocky Mountain (7:56.21). The Post Falls girls 3,200 relay team placed fourth in 9:41.44.

In team competition, Coeur d’Alene (23) is tied for second place with Capital in 5A boys with Rocky Mountain (34) in possession of the lead. Mountain View leads the 5A girls with 35 points. Lake City (16) is tied for fourth and Post Falls (8 1/2) is 10th.

Bishop Kelly (33) leads 4A girls with 33 points and is tied for the 4A boys lead with 26 points.
