Vikings hand Lake City first league loss

| May 4, 2017 11:44 PM

COEUR d’ALENE — When Lake City and Coeur d’Alene resumed their rain-suspended April 25 softball game Thursday at Larry Schwenke Field, the Timberwolves kept their 5A Inland Empire League record unblemished.

It wouldn’t last.

After Lake City dispatched Coeur d’Alene 5-2 in game one, the Vikings handed their crosstown a rival 10-0 rout heading into next week’s Region 1 tournament.

Kylie Smith’s two-run homer in the second frame of game two sparked Coeur d’Alene, which jumped out to a swift 6-0 lead.

“That was the difference,” Coeur d’Alene assistant coach Mike Baum said. “Jumping out to that big lead in the second inning was big for us.”

Vikings hurler Betty Comack pitched a shutout in the mercy-rule shortened game.

In the first game, which resumed in the bottom of the fourth with Lake City leading 2-1, Coeur d’Alene was able to knot the score at 2-2 before giving up three runs in the sixth.

Reilley Chapman’s go-ahead RBI single lifted the Timberwolves.

The No. 1 seed Timberwolves (6-1, 11-1 5A IEL) play host to fourth-seed Lewiston on Tuesday to open the regional tournament at Lake City High.

Second seed Coeur d’Alene (11-9, 7-5 5A IEL) will face No. 3 seed Post Falls on Tuesday. A game site has not yet been determined.
