Gear up for GizMotion 2017

| May 9, 2017 1:00 AM

COEUR d’ALENE —You don’t have to be an engineer to participate in Gizmo-CDA’s upcoming free brainstorming sessions.

One workshop for adults and one for kids will be held in preparation for Gizmo’s third annual GizMotion, a celebration of creativity highlighted by a parade of human-powered vehicles.

At 6:30 p.m. Friday, Gizmo will host a free “Gears, Beers and Engineers” session for any adults interested in designing and/or building a human-powered vehicle for the July 8 GizMotion 2017 festival. The children’s event, “Gears, RootBeers and Engineers,” follows May 13 at 1 p.m.

Both events are open to the public, will include light refreshments and snacks and will be held at Gizmo-CDA, 806 N. Fourth St. in Coeur d’Alene. No registration necessary.

Gizmo created the free, family-friendly event in 2014, collaborating with CDASk8Prk and BikeCDA to showcase the “art of movement” with kinetic sculpture, a human-powered vehicle parade and demonstrations of all manner of vehicles. Since then, the event, formerly called the Kinetic Festival, has expanded, relocating from Riverstone to McEuen Park and finally to Coeur d'Alene City Park.

In addition to human-powered vehicles, GizMotion 2017 will feature an interactive “Kingdom of Innovation” area where kids and adults can make, do and try things; a “Transform Your Transport” area to gussy up bikes, skateboards, wheelchairs, scooters or whatever in time to participate in the parade; and a food and beer garden because creativity is thirsty work.

All events are free.
