BUSES: A positive link

| May 3, 2017 1:00 AM

Public transportation is vital in improving our local economy, providing an alternative to driving, and helping improve citizens’ quality of life. Ranked as the 11th fastest growing population in the country by MSA, Coeur d’Alene is growing fast. As we grow, the need for high quality public transportation will play a larger role.

Public transportation gives people from all walks of life freedom to mobilize. It benefits our local economy: According to the American Public Transportation Association, “Every $1 invested in public transportation generates approximately $4 in economic return.” It helps save money for people by eliminating costs for gas and maintenance. It gets cars off the road, which prevents congestion and wear and tear on roadways.

The thought that the transit center will become a haven for criminal activity is a concern for some but with proper security practices, such as cameras, proper lighting and our outstanding police departments, we can maintain a safe and secure transit center for everyone. Another concern is that Citylink doesn’t service all of Kootenai County. I agree we need to expand public transportation to help benefit the majority of Kootenai County residents; the transit center is a good first step.

I support the Kootenai County Board of County Commissioners in moving forward with the Transit Center to improve our economy, provide safe transportation for all, and to give the people of Kootenai County greater freedom to travel in our cities.
