SELECT SOCCER

The Sting Timbers 17-and-under girls qualified to compete in the 2017 US Youth Soccer Region IV (West) Championships by winning their age division at the Idaho State Cup last weekend in Boise.

The team will be among the more than 230 top US Youth Soccer Boys and Girls teams from the 14 US Youth Soccer State Associations competing for the regional title, June 19-25 at the US Youth Soccer Region IV Championships at the 60 Acres Soccer Complex in Redmond, Wash., outside Seattle.

The Region IV Championships feature top teams in the 13U through 19/20U age groups beginning with round robin games Monday, June 19, through Wednesday, June 21. Following a rest day, quarterfinal matches will be played Friday, June 23, with semifinals Saturday, June 24. The Region IV champions will be crowned following final games on Sunday, June 25.

US Youth Soccer State Cup champions and select runners-up from 14 US Youth Soccer state associations in Region IV, including host Washington Youth Soccer will participate. The other state associations represented are Alaska, Arizona, California North, California South, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Wyoming.

Regional winners of the 13U through 19/20U age groups earn a berth to the 2017 US Youth Soccer National Championships, July 24-30, at the Toyota Soccer Center in Frisco, Texas. One of the 14 national crowns awarded is the James P. McGuire Cup, the oldest trophy in youth sports, dating back to 1935 with the inaugural youth championships.

Sting Timbers FC 03 Boys Red: The Sting reached the semifinals at Idaho State Cup in Boise. In four matches the team scored eight goals. In the first match against FC Nova Gold, Walker Jump scored twice; Christopher Swider scored once. In the second match against Idaho Rush Premier one goal was scored by Christopher Swider. In the third match against Boise National Timbers Blue, Christopher Swider scored once. The final match was against CGA Sounders SC and goals were scored by Nate Durocher and Ronan Malaghan.

Sting Timbers FC Girls G04 Red: The Sting traveled to Boise over the Memorial Day weekend to play in the Idaho State Cup. The team first played a strong Idaho Rush Premier squad on Friday and lost 5-0. On Saturday, they faced the Indie Chicas 2004 team, and played to a 0-0 draw. Danika Nowak had the shutout as keeper. The final game on Sunday, decided the playoff draw as the girls were matched against Sandpoint Strikers Eddy/Williams, and after a fast start, fell 2-1 to close out their play. Olivia Wyatt scored the goal for the Sting Timbers, with Shelbie Shriner assisting.

Sting Timbers FC 02 Girls: The Sting won 2 games and lost 2 games at the Idaho State Cup in Boise last weekend. On Friday night Sting lost to the Indie Chicas 02 Lime 3-0. On Saturday, Sting lost to FC Nova 02 3-1 with the lone Sting goal scored by Geneva Bengtson.

On Sunday morning Sting beat the Boise Nationals Timbers U15 02 Blue 4-1. Geneva Bengtson had a hat trick for Sting with assists from McKenzie Mattis and Madyson Smith on a corner kick. Grace Anderson-Mosher also scored for Sting off a corner kick from Abbie Lyman. Alex Plucker had 5 saves in goal.

Then on Sunday afternoon Sting beat the Boise Nationals Timbers 02 Red 3-1. Sting goals were scored by Riley Anderson on a free kick, Geneva Bengtson unassisted and Alexi Wilson assisted by Julie Stith. Alex Plucker had over 25 saves in the goal for the weekend for the Sting Timbers.

Sting Timbers FC 03 Girls Red: The Sting travelled to Boise to play in the Idaho State Cup last weekend. They came away with two ties against Boise Nationals Timbers - Blue (1-1) and FC Nova - Red (1-1), and one loss against Indie Chicas Lime (2-0). Sting Timbers goals for the tournament were scored by Amber Aittama (assisted by Holly Hudson) and Myah Rietze.

BASKETBALL

Trojan boys camp: Post Falls High School boys basketball coach Mike McLean heads the instructional staff at the annual Trojan Summer Basketball Camp, for boys and girls entering grades 2-8.

The camp is scheduled for June 12-15 from 9:30 a.m. to noon each day. Cost is $85, which includes a camp T-shirt. Discounts are available for families with more than one child attending the camp.

Lake City girls camp: First-year Lake City High School girls basketball coach James Anderson heads the instructional staff for the Lake City High girls basketball camp, scheduled for June 14-16 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Lake City gym.

Lake City players and assistant coaches will also provide instruction for the camp, for girls entering grades 1-6.

Cost is $60 per camper, which includes a camp T-shirt. Discounts are available for additional campers from the same family.

HAYDEN RECREATION AND COMMUNITY EVENTS

Baseball signup deadline nears: Friday is the deadline for registration for the youth baseball program offered by the Hayden Recreation and Community Events department.

The program is for boys and girls age 4-10 (as of July 10). Signup fees are $23 for Hayden residents, $28 for non-residents. If spots are still available after the signup deadline, a late fee will be charged.

Divisions are: Age 4-5 (T-ball/coach pitch); age 6-7 (coach pitch/T-ball); and age 8-10 (pitching machine/coach pitch).

Games are scheduled to start July 10.
