Joan Landon, 94

Joan Robinson Landon, 94, of Hayden, Idaho, passed away April 29, 2017, at her home. She was born Sept. 17, 1922, in Cambridge, England, to William and Rose (Strange) Robinson, the youngest of five children born to the Robinsons.

While in school she was honored as Queen of the May. During World War II, Joan worked in the local post office. She attended a GI dance in Cambridge and was, at the time, engaged to a young man. At the dance she met Fred Landon, a charming U.S. soldier, who was a U.S. citizen originally from Germany. He swept her off her feet and immediately she broke off her engagement and agreed to marry Fred in the U.S. where they would reside. She left her family and friends for a new life in America with her new husband. They were married on May 14, 1946, in New York. During their early married life, Joan took a position as a typist in a factory. She spent her first paycheck on a pair of Andrew Geller shoes.

As well as growing up in Cambridge, Joan lived in Long Island, N.Y., Dallas, Texas, and finally Hayden, where she moved to in 2001. She volunteered at Kootenai Hospital, knitted prayer shawls for patients that needed comfort and baby blankets for her great-grandchildren.

Joan’s hobbies were reading, knitting and oil painting. She was an avid bridge player, loved classical music and enjoyed attending Mozart in Manitou Park annually. She also was fortunate to travel quite a bit, including trips to Brazil, Hawaii, Germany, France, England, Mexico and Canada. She attended Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church in Dallas, and First Presbyterian Church in Coeur d’Alene. She also participated in a local Bible study in Dallas.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Fred Landon; her parents and four siblings. She is survived by her four children, Carol Landon of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and her two children, Paul Hanson (Tami) of Moscow, Idaho, and Laura Taylor (Keith) of Coeur d’Alene; Bob Landon (Barbara) of Arlington, Texas, and his two children, Katy Schreyach (Chris) and Jeff Landon; Debbie Tether (Mark) of Wichita Falls, Texas, and their two children, Christina Thorp (Jack) Colorado Springs, Colo., and Collin Tether of Valparaiso, Ind.; Joy Houston (Roy Sykes) of Pembroke Pines, Fla., and her son, Garett Houston (Lindsey); and seven great-grandchildren.

Joan was a loving, compassionate and nurturing wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be dearly missed. Special thanks to Juli Hansen, Diane Bennett, Lori Schneider, RN-Hospice and Aline Rohde, social worker-Hospice.

The memorial service will be 3:30 p.m. Friday, June 2, 2017, at the First Presbyterian Church with a reception following at the church. Yates Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.
