My Garden Path
We were treated to a fascinating talk by a butterfly expert at our latest garden club meeting. Most of us gardeners hold a special affection for these delicate creatures. Unfor-tunately, they have declined in number recently. There are two major reasons for this. One, being the loss of habitat and the other the ever-increasing use of pesticides and herbicides.

Housing reports cause confusion
It is no wonder that people have such a hard time getting a grasp on the housing market. Reports this week, like many others, are mixed. On Tuesday the Associated Press issued a headline stating that. "U.S. home price gains slow in June." Aside from the fact that tomorrow is the first day of September and the article was created in late August this article caused concern for some.

Run the right race
In a village long ago lived a young boy who loved nothing as much as competing in athletic contests. Because he was fit and strong, he usually triumphed, and he grew to love the adulation he received from the villagers around him. One day he challenged two other youths to a race from one end of the town to the other. The villagers all lined up to watch. The boy won, and the townspeople cheered wildly.

LIFESAVER: Thank you, Dr. Lyon
Dr. Wilbur Lyon saved my life! In 1985 I was packed and ready to go to a relative’s 50th anniversary in Modesto, Calif. But in the morning when I raised my arm I felt a pain in my side. I went to Dr. Lyon, my doctor of many years, and after he looked at the X-ray, he said, “You’re not going anywhere. Unpack your suitcases and be here at the hospital in the morning for surgery, if you make it.” He removed a large tumor from my large intestine which was cancerous and ready to burst. And here I am for my 96th birthday with no sign of cancer. Hospice is my favorite charity.

The optics of presidential golf: A historical dilemma
President Obama's befuddling decision to play golf, moments after denouncing ISIS' savage beheading of an American journalist, cast into sharp relief the historical dilemma that has surrounded presidents who enjoy chasing a little white ball across green pastures. From the time that presidents first swung hickory-shafted golf clubs, they have been stuck in a seemingly inescapable sandtrap of public criticism. The electorate's estimation of presidential golf has never been very high, but it is scornful of it in times of war and tragedy, as Obama has learned.

RELIGIOUS FREEDOM: Belongs to all
I’d like to remind Mr. Leonard Brandt that there are many scriptures involving sexual misconduct to be found throughout the Bible. Most of those scriptures pertain to heterosexual behavior. I suppose that the real “religious freedom” argument to be found here, is to politically ignore anything inconvenient found in biblical scriptures. Otherwise, use that “religious freedom” argument as yet another excuse to attack this nation’s president.

FLAG: 'Rumors' abound
The Aug. 26 article about the offending U.S. flag atop a Forest Service tree was insightful. Professional tree climbers were rushed in to assess the problem. Public displays of patriotism were applauded, but NOT allowed on public land. And it was reassuring to learn what careful drivers we have in the Forest Service. They had their eyes on the road for several months, not looking up to see the flag. We hope they will also be careful to stay out of the tree. It would take two of their professional climbers on top of the tree at the same time to properly fold the flag. That would be very dangerous. Some believe the Forest Service might have spotted the problem sooner if they occasionally put two people in one pickup.

During Barack Obama’s first campaign for president, he was asked his opinion on same-sex marriage and responded, “Marriage should be between a man and woman.” Three years after he became president of the United States, and after much pressure from Hollywood and LGBT PACs, he pushed their agenda and now literally anyone can get married. He would not have been elected had the electorate known of his lack of conviction on this one issue.
FLAG: Leave it alone
Shame on the Panhandle National Forest for wanting to remove this beautiful flag. I have been admiring it for more than a month and it brings a smile to my face every day when I drive by, especially now when there is so much turmoil in the world and all that ever is reported is bad news. We finally have something good to talk about and enjoy. So shame on anyone that would like to remove this beautiful flag. Is the Panhandle Forest also going to remove the beautiful cross at the top of the pass too?

The power of the squat
I went on a mission trip to Nepal for a month when I was an Adjunct Professor at Loma Linda University in the School of Physical Therapy. In Nepal, everywhere you go, you see people squatting: whether talking to each other, washing their clothes at the river's edge, or relaxing at the market. Squatting is just part of their lifestyle.
Dental health and school performance
A recent study was done in Los Angeles, in which they looked at the link between oral health and school performance. In a group of roughly 1,500 students, they found that children who reported having recent tooth pain were four times more likely to have a low grade-point average - below the median GPA of 2.8 - when compared to children who had not had dental pain.

AGENDA: Open-minded, considerate
I could not leave Beth Hanes letter go unchallenged. I agree with her on one point that Sholeh does appear to have an agenda. How the area teams might fare
With another lean toward optimism, here's my season predictions for the area's big four college football teams:
Personal vs. 'Real' property
It is with some frequency that buyers of a property feel entitled to a seller's personal property after the contract is signed. Things like firewood, a rusty junk pile, the vegetables in the garden and sometimes even pets become a point of contention when approaching the agreed upon date of the sale if buyer and seller are not aware of the obligations within their contract.
V stands for Volunteering
Volunteer Corner
The nonprofit agencies in Kootenai County and the surrounding areas do amazing work with very little. Living in a caring community, we often hear of the many fundraisers and campaigns taking place to provide financial support to ensure the lights stay on and the doors stay open. But what we don't often hear about is who does the work. It takes thousands of hours of volunteering at these locations to provide the greatly needed programs and services. Serving the most vulnerable in our community is a commitment that many agencies continue to make even when funding is hard to come by. We have heard of organization leaders taking pay cuts because they know how valuable the work is that is being done. Volunteers that serve the community can provide a skilled workforce and receive a return on investment even greater than a monetary contribution.

Gas, bloating after eating: You might have IBS
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) affects millions of people on a daily basis. The symptoms of IBS may include constipation, bloating, abdominal cramping, gas or diarrhea after eating. Some medications may provide immediate relief; the results are usually temporary and do not treat the underlying causes of the digestive problem. Many of today's chronic health conditions associated with inflammation are linked to the digestive tract and changes in its microflora (bacteria).

With autumn just around the corner, our store customers who knit have been keeping busy through the summer months on projects for the holidays and charity projects we help support throughout the year. We're always setting goals and sharing stories around the knitting table. Some are huge goals like our knitter Mary Ford, who completed the Coeur d'Alene Ironman along with her husband Jim. Others are focused on learning to knit socks or picking up the challenge of a hand-knit sweater. Setting goals and sharing time with others is key to a healthy lifestyle.

Does the weather really affect my pain?
The next time you watch the weather forecast, notice the barometric pressure, measured in inches. Typically, when a low pressure front is coming (and they do, all the time), it signals not only a change in the weather but a drop in the barometric pressure, which is pressure against the Earth's atmosphere. As a very loose rule, a high-pressure area will be clear and a low-pressure area will be cloudy and rainy. Remember when Grandma would say, "Rain's coming, and I can feel it in my joints?" She actually knew this because of what happens to our bodies when the barometric pressure changes.

Swim for it, Morris!
Every summer from sixth to eleventh grade, I went to summer camp for a week at a beautiful lake in southern Virginia called Smith Mountain Lake. It was a special place for lots of reasons, but the best reason was that was where I learned to waterski. I thought it would be easy. I had seen my parents ski since an early age. They loved the water; many of my early memories of my family together took place around the water. I just figured I would hop right in and ski on one ski, just like they did. Little did I know, it wasn't that simple to learn to waterski.
BULLIES: Here, there, everywhere
I wanted to address the issue of bullying. Nothing new as far as I can see. Since I started school in 1959 and finished in 1971, bullies were the norm. Finding balance
Smooth, silky, seamless, elegant and yes, balanced. In our time talking to folks about wine and learning what they like, the lion's share prefer wines that are balanced, regardless of the term they use to describe it. The important thing for wine consumers is to find wines they like the taste of, and as wine professionals our job is to find those wines that meet those needs. Part of that is embracing wines of all styles (even though they may not be our favorites), looking at them objectively to ensure they are well made - and yes, balanced - but in assessing them, not to disassemble them into all the components that lead to a balanced presentation when you taste the wine.

Other victims of the recession
The recession hit hard in America as well as here in North Idaho. Not only were families affected by job loss and the resulting foreclosures of their homes, but there were other victims as well. With an inability to make house payments came other difficulties including a decrease in revenue for Home Owners' Associations. HOAs, dependent upon periodic dues from the families in their neighborhoods found themselves strapped as they struggled to maintain the areas governed by their Conditions Covenants and Restrictions (CCRs). Just as neighbors suffered, so did their neighborhoods.

SUICIDE: Help needed - now
The world is shocked and saddened at the death by suicide of Robin Williams. I, too, know the pain of suicide. I lost my 34-year-old daughter, Robin Leferink, to suicide one year ago. Words can never express the agony of losing a child. The common denominator is mental illness. Her last year of life only those few closest to her witnessed her bi-polar disorder. I now know she suffered for years with symptoms undiagnosed and hidden from those around her while trying desperately to feel and act normally.

The current state of negotiant wine
A "dust up" in the wine blogosphere this week brought the subject of negotiant wine back to the front of our consciousness. Negotiant has two meanings here and in Europe. In Europe, any wine produced from grapes not owned by the winery and winemaker is referred to as negotiant. In other words, it is any non-estate sourced wine grape stock. Here in the United States, we refer to any wine purchased in bulk when the wine is completely manufactured and simply bottled by some entity other than the manufacturer as negotiant.

SLAVERY: Time to end it in the U.S.
Last month, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Human Trafficking Prioritization Act (H.R.2283). If signed into law, this legislation would elevate the U.S. government’s Trafficking in Persons Office to a State Department Bureau, a change that would help ensure that human trafficking is upheld as a foreign policy priority for the United States. The bill doesn’t add cost or bureaucracy and would be a critical step forward in the fight against human trafficking, a crime which enslaves nearly 30 million people worldwide. Now that the House of Representatives has acted, it is time for the Senate to follow suit.

Commercial market shows gains
As we reflect upon our performance so far this year, it is easy to see improvement over 2013. Those improvements are chronicled here each month as with this column. Wow, Joe Gerard. You singled out illegal Hispanics; I have lived here for seven years in Post Falls. I come from Southern California. I am a white, blonde, blue-eyed German/English. Ginsburg's remarks reminders of U.S. gender inequality
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's remarks at a law school conference on the U.S. Supreme Court's relative indifference to the rights of women in recent years reflects the checkered historical record of American institutions and businesses on the matter of gender equality. Justice Ginsburg's stirring dissents from recent opinions that have inflicted harsh blows to women's rights in cases involving equal pay, medical leave and contraception, remind us of the long, winding and unfinished road that women have traveled in their march toward equality with men. The court, she said, has never quite embraced "the ability of women to decide for themselves what their destiny will be."

Sometimes it takes a tragedy to make us realize just how much people really care. This is a tale of two cities: One Waukegan, Ill., the city I was born and raised in; the other, Coeur d’Alene, where I now reside. Coeur d’Alene is much like Waukegan was until the mid-80s — a nice place to grow up and raise kids in. It was a lake city with plenty of parks and activities for children during the summer breaks, trick or treating in the fall, and ice skating and sledding in the winter. The crime rate was low and people knew their neighbors.

Thursday morning, my daughter called me just after 6 a.m. Heading out to work, she placed our 7-month-old granddaughter in her car seat, gave her the car keys to play with, shut the door, went back in the house to get our 5-year-old granddaughter and when she came out, you guessed it, the baby had pushed the lock button on the key fob and locked herself in. We arrived a few minutes later, and saw our granddaughter inside, out of her car seat, standing at the door, grinning at us. She just never pushed the button again. No one had a spare key.

This is why people lose faith in politicians.

Isabel C. Christofferson, 92
Isabel Carroll Christofferson, 92, passed peacefully away on July 19, 2014, in Seattle, Wash., surrounded by family. She was known for her intelligence, compassion, tremendous spirit, beauty, and wit, as well as her great love of friends, family and animals. Born Feb. 14, 1922, in Casper, Wyo., one of Floyd Doc and Grace Carroll's six children, she grew up in Wyoming and Hollywood, where her father was a stunt double for the great Western stars of the day, including Tom Mix. When her father became the Wyoming state veterinarian, the family returned to Wyoming and a ranch outside Cheyenne, Remount Ranch, which they owned with author Mary O'Hara and her husband. Isabel liked to tell stories of listening to O'Hara typing away on the book My Friend Flicka when Isabel was a child. Isabel attended the University of Wyoming, where she met her future husband, DuWayne Chris Christofferson, of Rock Springs, Wyo. The two moved to Chicago, where Chris worked as a civil and nuclear engineer for Chicago Bridge and Iron for over four decades, and started a family. In addition to being a loving and adored mother and grandmother, Isabel found time to model, play tennis, and indulge her passion for the arts in particular she was an eloquent writer and loved film. Isabel passed her writing genes on to her children and grandchildren, several of whom are successful authors. Isabel's other great passion was travel. Together, during a marriage that lasted over 50 years, Isabel and Chris traveled the world with their many wonderful friends but they always returned to the West, spending a great deal of time in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, at the family cabin overlooking Lake Coeur d'Alene. In 1997, Isabel's father-who, in addition to being a veterinarian, was the youngest to ever win the World Championship in bronc busting at Cheyenne Frontier Days-was inducted into the Cowboy Hall of Fame's Hall of Great Westerners, joining the likes of Teddy Roosevelt, Sacagawea and Will Rogers. In typical Isabel fashion, Doc's eldest daughter had fought tirelessly for this honor for her father. Speaking before a crowd of Western dignitaries and Hollywood stars, on that night, Isabel accepted the award for her beloved family with grace and humility. After Chris's death, Isabel moved west for the final time, first to Coeur d'Alene, to be with her children and grandchildren. In 2009, she moved to Seattle, to be near her youngest child, Lisa Lisa's partner, Leon Jackson and the light of each of Isabel's days her granddaughter Chlo Isabella. Isabel stayed abreast of the news, enjoyed the company of her family, legions of friends and caretakers, and spoke up for those without voices until the very end. She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.
TRAPS: Certainly not dog-friendly
Is anyone out there listening? Since we are such a dog friendly community, and advertise that, as being one of our assets. Why is it our dogs are being killed and injured in traps set too close to our recreational areas. The solution is easy. Do not set, bait and hide KILL TRAPS anywhere near our hiking/biking paths. Dogs can smell the bait and are drawn to the traps. When caught, all you can do is watch them die. This has happened more often than you realize. Please put a stop to this before a child or adult fall victim to these traps. Thank you.

LETTER: Arrogant as its accusations
Pot calling the kettle, Mr. Membury. I can remember your heated comments on a wide range of subjects, blustering against Jimmy Pappas and his opinions. So I’m arrogant, am I? That’s funny considering that my column was my opinion, you know, MY TURN. If you bothered to read the whole column, instead of picking out words that suit your purpose and point of view, that would be one thing. I did not say that you didn’t have a right to speak about women and their essential rights. What I did suggest is that if you are going to speak out about what is essentially a women’s issue, until you have the reproductive system of a woman, then and only then can you say birth control, as well as abortion, is not something that should be a woman’s choice.

CORE: GOP eager to stunt education
It appears the Republican National Committee has convinced those with their head in the sand, that our level of primary/high school education is a-okay. They are apparently content with our youth graduating from high school, should they be so lucky, working at minimum wage jobs, then drawing government assistance and food bank supplies to support their families. Yes, I said government assistance.

ARFEE: Fatal shot echoes still
Let me see if I understand this correctly: A cop approached this van with his gun drawn. The windows were rolled half down with a “black Lab” inside that was apparently barking at the officer. The officer claims he was lunging at him (how can a dog lunge through a half-closed window?). At that point the cop shot the dog through the window, killing the dog; saying that he thought it was a pit bull.

Sen. Crapo seeks help of North Idaho veterans
The men and women of our Armed Forces face many challenges as they protect our nation. Because of the unique challenges they face and solemn sacrifices they make, Congress must support the needs of service members both on the battlefield and upon their return. The recent exposure of the mistreatment of veterans seeking assistance through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) again underscores the need to improve the delivery of assistance to our nation's veterans. The scandals prove that the stakes are high: Congress must get VA reform right this time. As I work with my congressional colleagues to address the needs of our nation's veterans, the policies I advocate must have a meaningful impact on our veterans in Idaho. In an effort to improve my understanding of veterans' needs, I invite Idahoans to share their VA experiences with me through a brief survey.

ALBRIGHT: Column takes reader back
Syd Albright always writes an excellent article, which is always enlightening. His mention of the 148th. Field Artillery and the 41st. National Guard Division brought back memories. I enlisted at age 16 in Company “E,” 116th Regiment of the 41st Infantry Division based in Twin Falls. It was a Combat Engineer Unit. This was in 1938. In June 1940 I quit school at the end of my junior year and enlisted in the Navy. At that time I received my Honorable Discharge from the 41st Division, the Sunset Division. While I was on “Boot” leave from the Navy in early September the 41st was mobilized for active duty. I missed life in a foxhole by about eight weeks.

DOGS: In honor of pit bull Eli
I have been debating, but I would like to jump into this black Lab-pit bull fiasco in defense of pit bulls. I have an 8-year-old pit bull in my household (not my dog), and he is nothing but a big overgrown baby; he loves to chase the ball, retrieve sticks, go swimming and likes people. I do have two 9-month-old kittens who would dearly love to play with Eli the pit bull, but one of my previous kittens gave him a hefty clout on the nose one day as he walked by minding his own business. It left a deep bloody gash on his nose, and he hasn’t forgotten it. Now, he does not trust cats, and evades them whenever possible.

ARFEE: You call this training?
We all go through some kind of training. Four-year apprentice program, 2-, 4-, 6-, 8-year college-university, some kind of training to get into the workforce and then continue to learn on a daily basis from there. Some jobs are “high” risk and some are “lesser” risk, whether it’s collecting trash or doing heart surgery. They are all important jobs. Police officer or store clerk, they both have a “risk,” but it is an individual choice. It doesn’t matter if you are 3,000 feet below ground in a mine or 35,000 feet up in the air in an airplane, or somewhere in between. We are all part of what it takes to make it work.
