SHELTON: Recall uncalled for

| August 27, 2014 9:00 PM

What? Recall Chris Shelton? Who are these people who want to get rid of one of the most reasonable and responsible Mica Kidd Island Fire District volunteer-elected commissioners? We were horrified to read in The Press that there was a recall movement against Chris Shelton. Oh my goodness, Shelton is an absolute blessing to MKIFD! We don’t know what demon has clouded the minds of 123 recall petition signers, but we pray they come out of their stupor ASAP!

In a nutshell, the commissioners are trying to keep the volunteer fire department alive and functioning by having non-paying entities that are draining the small budget like the Ironman, Inc., who currently pay nothing for the expensive services MKIFD provides during their events.

Small budget minus cost of huge non-paying events = drained budget. Shelton’s fee proposal seeks to get the revenue necessary to keep the mainly volunteer-run MKIFD functioning, so they have the money to protect local tax-paying residents in emergencies.

In The Press’s Aug. 16 article “Recall,” Gretchen Hauser claims, “We have a vision for the fire district. It’s not the same as his.” Well not so fast there, missy — not all agree with you and the petitioners. Our vision for MKIFD is the same as Shelton’s and the other commissioners. As county residents, we support the vision to keep MKIFD alive and functioning and do not support the recall movement which seeks to create a continued path to obliterate our fire protection service.
