Late Lake City FG gives Rocky the boot

MERIDIAN - After making the long drive down south, the Lake City Timberwolves made another long drive in the waning seconds Friday night to make the long drive home much more enjoyable.

Trailing by one point, Lake City marched deep into Rocky Mountain territory, and Casey Bourque kicked a 22-yard field goal as time expired to give the Timberwolves a 39-37 victory over the Grizzlies in the season opener for both teams.

Rocky Mountain took a 37-36 lead with a touchdown and two-point conversion run by Jake Roper with a couple of minutes left. Roper rushed for 199 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries.

Michael Goggin directed Lake City on its game-winning drive, chipping in a long run of his own deep into Rocky territory. Bourque booted the game-winning kick after two timeouts by Rocky in an attempt to freeze him.

Connor Newby ran for 193 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries for Lake City, which lost 63-41 at Rocky Mountain in last year's opener. Newby's 84-yard run put the Timberwolves up 36-29 in the fourth quarter.

Goggin ran for 57 yards and a touchdown on eight carries, and also passed for 179 yards and two scores, both to Jerry Louie-McGee. Louie-McGee finished with eight catches for 131 yards.

Lake City plays host to Lewis and Clark next Friday.
