Osburn youth advances: Stephen Paul of Osburn won the boys 7-9 age division Sunday in subregional qualifying for the Drive, Chip and Putt Championship at The Golf Club at Hawks Prairie in Lacey, Wash.

Paul advances to the regional qualifier Sept. 6 in Park City, Utah.

The national championship is scheduled for April 5, 2015 at Augusta National Golf Club, site of The Masters.

BASEBALL

Locals at Series: Inland Select, a Spokane-based team with a few North Idaho players, was 1-2 after three games at the 14-and-under Babe Ruth World Series in Ocala, Fla.

After an 11-1 win over Ottumwa, Iowa, in the opener on Friday, Inland Select fell behind 9-0 and lost 9-6 to Mt. Olive, N.J., on Saturday, then lost 9-8 to Tri-Counties, Texas, on Sunday, after leading 7-3.

The team was scheduled to wrap up pool play on Tuesday vs. Florida. The top three teams from the five-team pool advance to the championship round.

BASKETBALL

Stars camps begin: The weekly Sunday basketball skills camps, put on by the Spokane Stars AAU girls basketball program, begin Sunday, Sept. 7 at The Fitness Center, 14210 E. Sprague in Spokane Valley.

Level 1 players (grades 1-4) meet from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; Level 2 (grades 5-7) meet from 12:30 to 2 p.m.; and Level 3 players (grades 8-12) meet from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Cost is $20 per session. Ron Adams, president of the Spokane Stars, heads the instructional staff, which includes Stars assistant coaches and present and past Stars players. Also, coaching staffs from area colleges will instruct on some Sundays.
