Derrick, Lakeland run past Lewiston

LEWISTON - Quarterback Tyrel Derrick rushed for three touchdowns, including the go-ahead 17-yard score in the fourth quarter, as the 4A Lakeland Hawks downed the 5A Lewiston Bengals 24-10 in the season opener for both teams Friday night at Bengal Field.

Lewiston had beaten Lakeland in the season opener the last two seasons.

Cade Coffey kicked a 49-yard field goal for Lakeland, which plays host to West Valley next Friday.

ST. MARIES - Isaac Walters and Bryant Asbury returned interceptions for touchdowns for the 2A Lumberjacks, which beat the 3A Wildcats in the season opener for both schools.

"Our defense really set the tone and played well defensively," St. Maries coach Craig Tefft said. "It was a great start to the season. Kellogg is good offensively, and to shut them out defensively, I was very pleased."

St. Maries travels to Freeman and Kellogg hosts Lakeside (Wash.) next Friday.

Vikings open

with two wins

COEUR d'ALENE - Missy Huddleston had 27 kills on the night as the Vikings opened their season with a pair of victories over Missoula schools, 25-19, 25-21, 25-22 over Sentinel and 25-9, 25-20, 25-16 over Big Sky.

Huddleston had 12 kills and Megan Ramseyer had 10 kills and 16 assists for Coeur d'Alene against Sentinel. Ali Williams had 14 assists and three aces, Zoe Burgess 12 digs, Sydney Bybee three blocks.

Kylie Frohlich led Sentinel with 13 kills.

Against Big Sky, Huddleston had 15 kills and 10 digs, Williams had 10 kills and eight assists, Ramseyer 19 assists, Burgess nine digs, Delaney Schmidt four aces.

"It's a great start to the season, but also shows your areas that need improvement," Coeur d'Alene coach Dee Pottenger said. "I am excited about our team chemistry. This is a hard-working group of girls who get along well."

Coeur d'Alene travels to Lake City on Tuesday to open 5A Inland Empire League play.

SPIRIT LAKE - Sophomore midfielder Allison Kirby picked up a hat trick, leading the Tigers past the visiting Wildcats in an Intermountain League match.

Timberlake (2-0, 2-0 IML) were without five players, including three starters, because they have yet to participate in the required 10 practices.

"We don't have much from our bench yet," Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. "These girls played without a lot of help from the bench. I'm proud the younger players are progressing quite well."

Kellogg (0-2, 0-1) hosts Bonners Ferry next Saturday.
