Boy, 7, seriously injured while playing with gun

A 7-year-old boy was seriously injured in an apparent accidental shooting Saturday at a Hayden residence.

Kootenai County Sheriff's Office deputies responded at 7 a.m. to the report of a shooting at the Midtown Mobile Park in the 9400 block of Government Way.

Once on scene, deputies were told that two unsupervised children had been playing with a handgun when the gun discharged and one child was struck in the head by a small-caliber bullet.

The injured boy was transported to Kootenai Health for medical care. He was later transferred to Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane, where he remained in critical condition Saturday night.

Sheriff's detectives are continuing to investigate.
