Athol embezzlement investigation ongoing

| August 9, 2014 9:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE - The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office issued a release Friday, saying it will continue its investigation into the alleged embezzlement of public funds from the city of Athol.

Recently, the city of Athol entered into a contract for a forensic audit to be conducted of its accounts. Until this audit is complete, an accurate dollar-loss amount is still unknown, the release said.

Former City Clerk Sally R. Hansen has been listed as a person of interest in the case. Detectives have confirmed that she is no longer in the area. Additionally, the sheriff's office received a letter July 11 from a local law firm, advising that it has been retained as counsel for Hansen and that she "will be exercising her right to remain silent."

Detectives are continuing to work closely with Athol Mayor Darla Kuhman to further the investigation.

No further information is available at this time, the release stated.
