Richard 'Dick' Moss, 65

| August 20, 2014 9:00 PM

Richard "Dick" Moss, 65, longtime resident of San Diego, Calif., went to be with the Lord on Aug. 18, 2014. He passed at the Hospice House of North Idaho.

Dick was born on Oct. 30, 1948, in Santa Barbara, Calif., to Vernon and Charlotte Moss of Lompoc, Calif. He graduated from Lompoc High School in 1966.

Dick served in the United States Coast Guard from 1967-1970. He was a search and rescue air crewman (AT2) on fixed wing planes and helicopters, stationed in San Diego.

Dick attended the College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1974. He then went to work for General Electric Credit Corp. In 1978, he joined Hawthorne Machinery Co. in San Diego. He was blessed to work with a wonderful group of employees, and enjoyed the customers of this Caterpillar Tractor Co.

Dick married Connie Van Meter in 1970 and they had two daughters, Karen and Katy. In 1980 he divorced and became a single dad until 1985.

In 1985 Dick married the love of his life, Susan Carter-Moss.

Dick, Susan, and daughter Katy moved to Donnelly, Idaho, in 1994 where Dick opened a small engine repair and retail stove business. He was able to fulfill a dream of working for himself. Then, in 1997, there was another opportunity to work for Hawthorne Machinery and Dick was blessed to return to a job he loved. He was the Corp. Finance Manager, Treasurer, and Assistant Secretary.

In 2000, Dick and Susan bought a home in Valley Center, Calif., and built the shop of his dreams. He loved to work on cars, and built two off-road Jeeps and restored an old Willys. Every year they would travel with great friends and 'Jeep' different areas of the U.S. Dick continued to work at Hawthorne until his retirement in February of 2014.

Dick and Susan moved to Rathdrum, Idaho, to retire. Dick was looking forward to enjoying his retirement hunting, fishing, jeeping, traveling, working in his shop, and spending time with family, grandkids, and many wonderful friends. This was the plan, but apparently it wasn't God's. After a long, valiant fight, Dick's body (not his spirit) was no long able to win the battle against prostate cancer.

Dick loved his wife, Susan; two daughters, Karen and Katy; son-in-law Jay; and two grandkids, Sophie and Ryder. He felt so blessed to have so many wonderful friends and family who gave him their prayers and support through his battle.

Dick wanted to thank the medical community for all they did to give him the gift of time - especially Dr. "Mac" and Dr. Sundaram at Sharp Rees Stealy in San Diego; Dr. "Raj" and staff at Medical Oncology; and all the staff of Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane, Wash. A special thanks to all the "Special Angels" at the House Hospice of North Idaho; you gave us the peace and love needed at a difficult time.

The funeral is planned for 10 a.m. tomorrow, Aug. 21, 2014, at Yates Hayden Chapel, 373 E. Hayden Ave., in Hayden; reception to follow. Dick will be put to rest at Pinegrove Cemetery, in Rathdrum, following the services. A memorial service will be held in San Diego with the date pending at this time.

In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation in Dick's memory to Hospice House of North Idaho, 9493 N. Government Way, Hayden, ID 83835; or the American Cancer Society, Prostate Research. Please visit Dick's online memorial and sign his guestbook at www.yatesfuneralhomes.com.
