Cd'A man accused of lying about car

POST FALLS - Dude, where's my car?

The answer to that question landed a 32-year-old in jail Saturday night.

Jonathan Woffenden, of Coeur d'Alene, reported his car stolen to the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office on Saturday evening. But, according to the deputy's incident report, the car wasn't stolen - just misplaced due to a day of drinking.

Woffenden told the deputy that he returned home in his Pontiac Grand Am at 6 p.m. on Saturday and did not lock the vehicle. When he walked outside less than two hours later, the car was gone and, according to the report, his neighbors told him they had not seen it leave the driveway.

The deputy had Woffenden fill-out and sign the Kootenai County Stolen Auto Form before he had a dispatcher enter the vehicle as stolen into a central database.

However, at 10:30 p.m., the deputy received a call from dispatch notifying him that Woffenden and his vehicle were with Post Falls Police Department officers in front of Bob's 21 Club.

When the deputy arrived at the bar, Woffenden told him that after the officer left his home he began looking for his vehicle and found it parked on the west side of Bob's 21 Club.

According to the report, there was no new damage to the Grand Am and the deputy turned the vehicle back over to Woffenden after having it removed from the stolen vehicle database.

In his incident report, the deputy wrote that he contacted the owner of Bob's 21 Club about the vehicle. While she couldn't provide him with surveillance footage from that day, she was able to email him a screen shot of a man exiting the Grand Am.

"In the photograph I could see the front end of what appeared to be the stolen Grand Am," the report states. "Also in the photograph was a male walking north bound towards the front of the building. The picture was clear and it was easy for me to identify the male as Woffenden."

The deputy read Woffenden his Miranda Rights and then asked the man if he knew why he was back at Woffenden's home. According to the report, Woffenden then admitted to the deputy that it was because the vehicle was not stolen.

"He then stated that he had 'blacked out' while drinking at Club Tequila in Post Falls," the report states. "I asked Woffenden how his vehicle got to Bob's 21 Club and he stated he drove it there before going to Club Tequila."

Woffenden allegedly told the deputy that the morning "became a blur" and when he found his car he didn't call the deputy back because he "felt embarrassed."

The man was arrested for filing a false affidavit for a stolen vehicle.
