DOGS: In honor of pit bull Eli

| August 1, 2014 9:00 PM

I have been debating, but I would like to jump into this black Lab-pit bull fiasco in defense of pit bulls. I have an 8-year-old pit bull in my household (not my dog), and he is nothing but a big overgrown baby; he loves to chase the ball, retrieve sticks, go swimming and likes people. I do have two 9-month-old kittens who would dearly love to play with Eli the pit bull, but one of my previous kittens gave him a hefty clout on the nose one day as he walked by minding his own business. It left a deep bloody gash on his nose, and he hasn’t forgotten it. Now, he does not trust cats, and evades them whenever possible.

Eli’s master is not married, so the dog accompanies him everywhere: To the bathroom, to the shower, to the beach, sometimes to work, and is always by his side in the pick-up. When parked, say at a supermarket, and the windows are left either cracked to wide open, Eli sits looking at people and watching them go by. He will not jump out, he doesn’t bark, he doesn’t growl and he doesn’t lunge. It hasn’t happened, but God help anyone who may come up and try to desecrate or enter his master’s property. I’m sure the Lord would be the only one who had enough power to help in this situation, as I believe that person would pull back a bloody stump should they be lucky enough that this was the appendage he clamped down on with his muscled jaws. Good dog.

Dogs by nature are not inherently mean or bad, regardless of the breed. It all depends on how they were raised, to be gentle or mean. Just like kids, good or bad. There is an old adage that says, “Don’t shoot the dog, shoot the owner.” This is a tad extreme, but it gets the point across. It’s not the dog’s fault, but rather the person who raised it that way.

The police department must be scraping pretty close to the bottom of the barrel if they cannot come up with someone who can tell the difference between a black Lab and a pit bull. With this type of mentality on the loose, I believe we’re in for a lot more trouble. In my estimation, anyone from the top on down who had a finger in this sordid mess should be eliminated from public duty. If not now, perhaps we voters can help the situation at election time. Nuff said.

P.S. I’m thinking my license plate will now be on the hit list.
