Marker recognizes Jewett House

| August 20, 2014 9:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE - A new marker recognizing the history of the Jewett House - and its connection to the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution - now graces the exterior of the three-story former residence on Lake Shore Drive.

The home, built in 1917 by Rutledge Timber Company, was granted to the city of Coeur d'Alene in 1978 by Potlatch Forest Company. Today, the historic structure serves as a senior citizens recreation center.

For more than 20 years, from the early 1990s until May 2012, the Lt. George Farragut Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held its regular monthly meetings at the Jewett House. An increase in membership - presently more than 100 - made it necessary for the group to seek a larger facility for its monthly meetings.

Last year, the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution - based in Washington, D.C. - granted the local DAR chapter permission to place a historical marker at the Jewett House site.

The effort was accomplished recently by a Lt. George Farragut DAR chapter committee chaired by Trish Thurston and including Liz Jones, Susan Schnedaker, Connie McGee and Cindy Lou Schobert.
