High school sports season

scheduled to begin today

The high school sports season is scheduled to open this afternoon, when defending Intermountain League champion Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy travels to Orofino for an IML girls soccer tilt at 1 p.m.

On Saturday, Lakeland visits Post Falls, and St. Maries plays at the Lewiston junior varsity in boys soccer. In girls soccer, it's Lakeland at Coeur d'Alene and Post Falls at Sandpoint.

The high school volleyball season begins next Thursday, the prep football season openers set for next Friday. The big local schools begin the prep cross country season next Thursday at the Post Falls River Run at Kiwanis Park.

The high school swimming season begins Sept. 6 with the Icebreaker Invitational in Clarkston.

* Timberlake is hosting a prep football jamboree Saturday beginning at 6 p.m. Other teams scheduled to participate are Lakeland, St. Maries, Kellogg and Sandpoint.
