Finney, Lake City boys, Coeur d'Alene girls win

POST FALLS - Lake City senior Jake Finney won the season-opening Post Falls River Run in 16 minutes, 55 seconds on Thursday afternoon at Kiwanis Park.

Finney was the first of three Timberwolves in the top 10 - Riley Estes was second in 17:35 and Zack Holbrook was sixth in 18:36 - helping claim the team title by seven points over Coeur d'Alene.

Coeur d'Alene won the girls title after placing seven in the top 10, led by Josie Brown, who finished second in 20:35.

Katherine Ruck of Moscow won the girls race in 20:14.

RATHDRUM - Sierra Mayberry had six aces and four kills for the Hawks in a 25-14, 23-25, 25-21, 13-25, 15-8 loss to the Badgers in the nonleague and season opener for both at Hawk Court.

Hailey Tierney had five aces for Lakeland, which hosts Sandpoint in the 4A Inland Empire League opener for both on Tuesday.

SPIRIT LAKE - Kiara Hauck, Courtney Eaton, Jamie Lickfold and Savannah Burns each had six digs for the Tigers, who fell to the visiting Bears 25-18, 25-17, 25-19 in the nonleague season opener for both.

Shea Dretke and Jacquelyn Mallet had three kills apiece, and Courtney Eaton had five assists for Timberlake, which travels to St. Maries on Tuesday.

KELLOGG - Marley Chambers had three aces and Andee Wendt three blocks to lead the Wildcats past the Warriors 25-7, 25-17, 25-19 in the nonleague season opener for both schools at Andrews Gymnasium.

"We still have a lot of improvements to make like getting our feet off the ground to tip balls back over the net," Kellogg coach Amanda Olson said. "But we also had a lot of good that we did in the match."

Kootenai hosts Deary next Thursday.

Kellogg hosts Wallace on Tuesday.

Clark Fork

CLARK FORK - Anna Verhaeghe had eight kills, two blocks and eight digs to pace Coeur d'Alene Charter to a 25-11, 25-19, 23-25, 25-9 nonleague victory over Clark Fork in the season opener for both teams.

Jackie Callihan had 17 assists and nine aces for Cd'A Charter.

"The girls started off strong," first-year Coeur d'Alene Charter coach Tera Armstrong said. "They had first-game jitters."

Charter plays at Lakeside on Tuesday.

SANDPOINT - Lake City got second-half goals from Kade Murphree, Shea Hannigan Luther and Ryan Swallow, and Jared Stone picked up the shutout as the Timberwolves beat the Bulldogs at Pine Street Field in Lake City's season opener.

"It's the first game, so we're trying to keep it in perspective," Lake City coach Chad Beadell said. "We had tons of opportunities and some great crosses; we were dangerous. I thought we played very well, and got the first-game jitters out."

Dawson Mulder scored in the seventh minute for Sandpoint (0-2).

Lake City travels to Moscow on Tuesday.

MOSCOW - Gunnar Skindlov scored two of the shorthanded Vikings' three goals in a nonleague win against the Bears at Moscow Junior High.

"We were missing some guys due to vacation and had some guys take off for the weekend, but I'm really proud of my group with only having 13 players," Coeur d'Alene coach Jeff Lake said. "It was tough down here today and thought we really had to grind out the win. It was a tough match and really tough to get that third goal. Moscow played really hard."

Daniel Challinor had two assists and Lane Thompson scored in the 68th minute for Coeur d'Alene (2-0), which hosts Sandpoint on Thursday.

BONNERS FERRY - Nacho Pino had a goal and an assist in the second half to lead the Hawks past the Badgers in a nonleague match.

Lakeland (1-1), which picked up an insurance goal by Cody Callahan in the 78th minute, held Bonners Ferry to one shot on goal.

"We were very pleased with our defense," Lakeland coach Andrew Craig said. "There wasn't a lot of breakdowns on defense, which is good for this early in the year. It really showed we need to work on finding the net and scoring goals, but I was really happy with the possession we had."

Lakeland travels to Lake City on Thursday.

Caleb Blackmore had nine saves in the Badgers' season opener.

PRIEST RIVER - Cody Bentley scored seven goals as the Tigers pounded the Spartans in an Intermountain League match.

Bentley, a sophomore, recorded the hat trick by the 21st minute for the Tigers (2-0, 2-0 IML).

"He (Cody) has had big games before, but this was only his second high school game," Timberlake coach and father Bert Bentley said. "We got our transition down better and he's just fast. Cody is able to win 50/50 balls almost every time."

Gage Harris scored two goals for the Tigers, who travel to Bonners Ferry on Tuesday.

It was the season opener for Priest River.

COEUR d'ALENE - Megan Lowery scored two goals, the second coming in the 69th minute, to lift the Vikings past the Bulldogs in a nonleague match at Canfield Middle School.

"It was a tough battle for us," Coeur d'Alene coach Andy Vredenberg said. "We didn't play particularly well, but the girls dug in and battled. They still fought, even though we weren't playing too well. Sandpoint is tough, they play very physically and were fighting until the last minute. They were very tough."

Sami Lane had six saves in the second half for Coeur d'Alene (2-0).

Caroline Suppiger scored in the 25th minute for Sandpoint (0-2).

The teams play again next Thursday at Memorial Field in Sandpoint.

PRIEST RIVER - Allison Kirby recorded the hat trick with three unassisted goals in the second half to lead the Tigers past the Spartans in Intermountain League play.

"She took the ball and took care of business by herself," Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. "I thought the freshmen grew up this game and it goes to show the character of this team. They were solid. Never gave up."

Kirby added an assist to Shelby Starr in the league and season opener for Timberlake, which hosts Kellogg today.

Brianna Novak and Angie Taylor scored goals for Priest River (0-2, 0-2 IML).
