Palaniuk drops to ninth after

second day of fishing event

UNION SPRINGS, N.Y. - Brandon Palaniuk, the former Lakeland High and North Idaho College wrestler, dropped from first place to ninth after Friday's second day of the A.R.E. Truck Caps Bassmaster Elite at Cayuga Lake.

Palaniuk had a total catch of 16 pounds, 5 ounces on Friday - bringing his two-day total to 36 pounds, 15 ounces.

Greg Hackney of Gonzales, La., weighed the day's heaviest bag of bass - 23 pounds, 1 ounce - to rise into the lead from fourth place. His two-day total was 43-6.

Todd Faircloth of Jasper, Texas, is in second with a total of 40 pounds, 4 ounces.

First high school sports

game of fall canceled

The opening game of the high school sports season in this area will have to wait until today.

Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy's girls soccer game at Orofino on Friday was canceled, after Orofino opted to fold its team due to a low turnout.

Kellogg's girls were scheduled to host Orofino today.

Charter is looking to find a couple of games to replace the two lost with the Maniacs.

Washington's Ring of Fame

The Washington Redskins will induct former quarterback Mark Rypien as the 46th member of its Ring of Fame on Oct. 19 when Washington plays the Tennessee Titans.

The Spokane resident and former Shadle Park and Washington State standout was named MVP of Super Bowl XXVI when he led Washington to victory over the Buffalo Bills.

"So honored and humbled to be inducted into the Washington Redskins Ring of Fame. Great memories of a great time in my life," Rypien tweeted Friday.

Rypien played in Washington from 1986 to 1993, appearing in 77 games with 72 starts. He completed 1,244 of 2,207 passes for 15,928 yards with 101 touchdowns and a passer rating of 80.2, and also rushed for eight touchdowns.

It was a bittersweet day as Friday's announcement came on the 16th anniversary of the death of Mark's 3-year-old son, Andrew, to cancer.

"As excited as I am, it's a difficult day for me," Rypien said at the team's Welcome Home Luncheon on Friday. "So thank you from the bottom of my heart for picking my spirits up and I'll remember this day forever."

Shock's Sanders named

AFL Playmaker of the Year

CLEVELAND - Spokane Shock defensive back/kick returner Terrance Sanders was named Playmaker of the Year in the Arena Football League.

Sanders (5-10, 180 pounds), from Eastern Illinois, led the league with 1,687 kickoff return yards and five combined kick return touchdowns. He also nabbed a team-high 11 interceptions to go along with 71 tackles and 16 pass breakups. Sanders has earned All-Arena honors each of the last three seasons.

Arizona Rattlers quarterback Nick Davila was named Offensive Player of the Year, as well as league MVP.

San Jose SaberCats nose guard Jason Stewart Defensive Player of the Year honors, and Orlando Predators wide receiver Greg Carr was named Rookie of the Year.
