A gentle, water-based cremation alternative now available in Coeur d’Alene
Dealing with the death of a loved one can be hard on families. In the past, there were 2 options: Burial or Flame Cremation. Thanks to new technology at English Funeral Chapel, the cremation process can be a more gentle experience that is more environmentally friendly. In 2018, owners Eric & Wendy English were attending an industry conference to learn more about Alkaline Hydrolysis - also known as Water Cremation or Aquamation. Aquamation is a form of cremation that uses water instead of fire to reduce the body down to only the inorganic bone minerals. After a year’s research, they decided it was something they should bring to Idaho. With Aquamation, the body is placed in a stainless steel vessel and a combination of gentle water flow, heat, pressure and alkalinity are used to accelerate the natural process of tissue hydrolysis. The process uses 95% water and 5 percent alkali, a combination of potassium hydroxide and sodium.

The day after President Joe Biden signed the bill into law in August, veterans set an all-time record for benefits claims filed online and more than 136,000 have applied for benefits under the toxic exposure law as of mid-November. The VA expects the number of veterans and surviving family members applying could reach more than 700,000 in the coming months.

Today's Ghastly Groaner
What should you expect at the end of Thanksgiving?

Prayers for families in grief journey
We’re tuned into and aware of thankfulness as Thanksgiving nears ... for the little things, the big things and all of the things in between that count as blessings.
UNITED AGAINST HATE: ‘Gross overreach’
My takeaway from the “United Against Hate” event at the Coeur d’Alene Casino on Nov. 17 was that under the claim of protecting vulnerable and/or traditionally oppressed groups, which surely must be done, the feds (U.S. Attorney, DOJ and FBI) are encouraging everyone to report any perception of a “hate crime or event.”
REGAN: Stop undermining election process
I had to chuckle while reading Brent Regan’s “Opinion: Election Confidence,” and not just because he’s quoting the author of Dilbert as an authoritative source for how to run an election.
GROWTH: Cities and counties should explore solutions
“Tackling Growth Together” was interesting to read but left me wondering about solutions and when they might be implemented.
DOCK FUNDS: Money needed to synchronize lights on U.S. 95
The funding for the proposed boat dock project on your Tuesday morning Coeur d’Alene Press front page probably came from a different, non-fungible state pocket, but that $500,000 would aid a lot more of our residents if it were used to synchronize the traffic lights on U.S. 95.

A peppy start to the holiday season with ‘Spirited’
Though they almost never go to theaters anymore, new Christmas movies are about as prevalent in America as Amazon boxes and Starbucks cups.

OPINION: Michael Gerson, a different kind of Conservative
We heard various definitions of conservatism during the recently concluded mid-term election campaign. “Vetted,” “Conservative, not crazy” and “RINO” (Republican in name only) were three of them. It is fascinating to me how far to the extremes North Idaho’s unique brand of conservatism has shifted. I thought of that recently when I read an obituary for Michael Gerson, who was President George W. Bush’s speechwriter in the White House and then an opinion writer for the Washington Post.

City floats $500K dock project
Most would be funded with state grant
The Third Street mooring docks near Tubbs Hill were built with wood and installed in 2000. Since, the city has spent close to $100,000 in repairs, about half of that in the past five years. For Parks Director Bill Greenwood, that's more than enough and it's time to replace them. Greenwood asked for and received permission for the Parks and Recreation Department to apply for a $350,000 state Waterfront Improvement Fund grant to help pay for the $500,000 project.

Tackling growth together
Cities, county, builders, employers and citizens unite to find housing solutions
There’s no silver bullet to fix the issues of growth and housing that face Kootenai County residents. “There’s not one thing,” Coeur d’Alene City Council member and affordable housing advocate Kiki Miller told a crowd this week. “There’s a bunch of different things we have to try to deploy.” Around 40 people gathered Thursday night at the Harding Family Center in Coeur d’Alene to hear a forum discussion focused on the role of cities, counties and builders presented by DART, a nonpartisan group.

Every year on Nov. 11, Americans gather at Veterans Day observations to honor and thank America’s veterans for their service to the country. It is certainly right and proper that they do so, but is that the extent of what our countrymen must do to show appreciation for those who put their lives at risk to serve the nation? As one of those veterans, I submit it is the very least of what they are obliged to do.
