Florence Ann Harris, 90

| November 9, 2022 1:00 AM

Florence passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2022, from cardiac arrest while living at Legends Assisted Living. She was born at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane, Wash., on March 7, 1932 to Edmund G. Quentin and Florence Agusta Wildermuth Quentin. She resided with her family at Carlin Bay, Idaho, until age 5. They moved to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where she proudly lived the remainder of her life.

Florence was the middle child and the only girl. Her siblings included older brother Robert Quentin and younger brother Harry Quentin. With the help of their Uncle Bob, the family built a home on Dollar Street in Coeur d’Alene, where they enjoyed being close to Lake Coeur d’Alene and Tubbs Hill. She attended Coeur d’Alene High school and enjoyed special friendships with many who would become lifelong friends. She enjoyed dance lessons and performed in her favorite Fourth of July Parades in Coeur d’Alene.

While working at the Dream Theater, a handsome young man named Roger Harris caught her eye and they married Oct. 22, 1949, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Coeur d’Alene. Soon after, they moved to Moscow, where Roger was a sophomore at the University of Idaho. At the completion of Roger’s schooling, they returned to Coeur d’Alene.

Florence and Roger raised three daughters: Laurie, Kay and Heather, who brought them great pride and joy. While raising their family, Florence was very involved in PTO with daily visits to classrooms at Winton Elementary to collect milk money. She was a Blue Bird leader and moved up to Camp Fire leader as the girls got older as well as an adult leader in Job’s Daughters. Florence was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Women’s group. She and Roger became teen youth leaders and chaperoned many retreats. The highlight was taking the youth group on a mission trip to Wrangell, Alaska. Florence was quick to volunteer and loved weekly time assisting in the craft room at Loyalton Assisted Living. She served alongside Roger for many years as fair walkers at the county fair.

Florence worked at the admissions/emergency desk at Lake City General Hospital in Coeur d’Alene. She also worked at Post Falls High School as secretary and attendance officer. After many years, she moved up to the district office as a secretary to the superintendent. Throughout the years, she and good friend Joyce Ekness started a very successful cake decorating business and created a multitude of beautiful birthday and wedding cakes.

She was always busy and loved to be around people. She was an active member of TOPS and proud of herself for becoming a KOPS. She belonged to a button group, quilting club, as well as a Friday sewing group. She looked forward to attending quilt shows, quilting retreats and holiday bazaars. She and Roger met weekly with several couples for Tuesday night dinner.

Florence loved her family, many friends, Gonzaga men’s basketball, Idaho Vandal football and figure skating competitions. She enjoyed their vegetable garden, growing flowers, huckleberry picking and canning and freezing the fruits of their labor. She was a great cook and baker. Florence and Roger enjoyed yearly fall trips to the Oregon coast in search of the best clam chowder in the state and crabbing. They loved visiting Hawaii and cruising. Even in her golden years, she ziplined in Panama and parasailed at Lake Coeur d’Alene. Quilting, knitting, reading and chocolate were her passions.

After Roger’s passing in 2016, Florence was weary from keeping up their large home. In April 2021, she chose Legends Assisted Living as her next home and was very fond of the new friendships and loving care she received by all the staff. Her family will forever be grateful to Legends.

Florence is survived by daughters Laurie Harris and Robert Burnham of Port Alberni, B.C., Kay and Greg Munden of Post Falls, Idaho, and Heather and Dan Wilson of Monitor, Wash. She is also grandma to Lalania & Mike Worley, Heather & Greg Wolf, Mercedes Munden & Hugh Nixon, Drew and Erica Wilson and Natalie and Jake Sadler. She loved her time as a great-grandma to Bryan, Roger, Jillian, Joshua, Payne, Grant, Ruby, Mimi, Madison, Harper, Peighton and Hudson. Florence is also survived by her brother, Harry Quentin of Castle Rock, Wash., and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m., Friday, Nov. 11, 2022, at Yates Funeral Home Coeur d’Alene Chapel (744 N. Fourth St. Coeur d’Alene, ID 83814). In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Kootenai Humane Society.
