NIC ROUNDUP: Cardinals advance to semis of NWAC volleyball championships

LAKEWOOD, Wash. — Taylin Rowley, a sophomore from Coeur d’Alene High, had 14 kills and 12 digs for North Idaho College in a 25-20, 25-23, 25-18 win over Lower Columbia of Longview, Wash., on Friday in the Elite 8, advancing the Cardinals to the semifinals of the Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball championships at Pierce College.

NIC (27-4), the top seed from the East Region, advances to face Columbia Basin (29-3) of Pasco in the semifinals tonight at 5. Columbia Basin, the second seed from the South Region, beat Skagit Valley (16-7) of Mount Vernon, Wash., 23-25, 25-15, 25-27, 25-19, 18-16 to advance.

NIC split matches with Columbia Basin during the regular season, beating the Hawks 25-15, 16-25, 17-25, 25-16, 15-13 in Coeur d'Alene on Sept. 21 and falling 25-16, 23-25, 25-21, 25-11 on Oct. 14 in Pasco.

Freshman Jessica Stires had 11 kills, freshmen Quincy Frohlich eight kills and two blocks and Rylee Hartwig six kills and three digs for NIC. Abigail Neff had 39 assists and nine digs.

Paige Chinchen had nine kills and nine digs for Lower Columbia (27-6), the second seed from the West Region.

TWIN FALLS — Freshman Meghan Calley from Highland High of Pocatello had 12 points and three steals for the Cardinals in a win over the NJCAA Saints of Redlands, Calif., in the Coca-Cola Invitational at the College of Southern Idaho.

Sophomore Paige Beem had nine points and 16 rebounds for NIC in the win, the first for new coach Nathan Covill, who took over the program in late July.

NIC outrebounded Community Christian 49-42.

NIC will face Southern Idaho today at 5 p.m.

Community Christian (0-7) is a second-year program, playing in the Scenic West Athletic Conference, the former home of the Cardinals.
