NIC to host NWAC regional volleyball tourney this weekend

COEUR d'ALENE — By virtue of winning the East Region championship last week, the North Idaho College volleyball team will be one of four hosts for regional rounds of the NWAC Volleyball Championships on Saturday and Sunday.

The first two rounds of the tournament are expected to be hosted by the No. 1 seed of each region.

The Cardinals clinched the East Region championship last Friday with a 3-1 win over Yakima Valley College.

The tournament will be in a two-day, double-elimination format in which the top two teams will move on to the Elite 8 the following weekend. There, they will face the top two teams in the three other NWAC regions.

On Saturday, Edmonds (North Region No. 3) plays Lane (South No. 2) at 10 a.m. NIC faces Tacoma (West No. 4) at 1 p.m. The losers of the first two matches play in the next match to follow.

On Sunday, Saturday's first two winners play at 10 a.m. for the championship of the East Bracket, and a spot in the Elite 8. The two remaining teams play in the match to follow for the bracket's second berth to the Elite 8.

NIC finished the regular season 15-1 in the East Region and 24-4 overall.

More information regarding the tournament can be found at nwacsports.com/volleyball_championship. Tickets can be purchased ahead of time or at the gate, both through the NWAC. NIC cannot accept canned food for the NIC food pantry as admission for the regional tournament.
