PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Lakeland a winner in opener

RATHDRUM — A senior and a freshman helped the Lakeland Hawks win their season opener in the Hawks’ head coaching debut of Tyrel Derrick on Tuesday night.

Kenna Simon, a senior, had nine points and 14 rebounds, and freshman Karstyn Kiefer made some big plays late as Lakeland survived a rough second half to beat the Lewiston Bengals 49-45 at Hawk Court.

Lakeland led by double digits in the first quarter, then saw Lewiston take a one-point lead in the fourth, before the Hawks finished strong.

“It was huge for them to understand how to be competitive through adversity, experiencing the ups and downs, and still finding success at the end,” said Derrick, who replaced Steve Seymour, who stepped down last spring after 27 seasons as Hawks’ coach.

Landree Simon led Lakeland with 14 points.

“We came out with a press, and that took them by surprise a little bit, and we got most of our points out of transition in the first half,” said Derrick, a former Lakeland star.

Addison McKarcher scored a game-high 20 points for Lewiston (0-3).

“They brought a press on us (in the fourth quarter), and we had a really hard time breaking it,” Derrick said.

After Lewiston took the lead, Lila Kiefer scored on a transition layup to put Lakeland ahead by one. Kiefer, who finished with three steals, hit three free throws in the waning moments to seal the win.

“Karstyn Kiefer, her first game ever on varsity, as a freshman, she had two or three of the biggest moments at the end, and she handled the ball against the press,” Derrick said. “She showed a real competitive spirit. And Kenna Simon bailed us out in some situations, getting some key rebounds.”
