Bella Murekatete, a senior from Genesis Prep Academy, had her third double-double in four games, finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds as Washington State beat South Dakota State 61-41 on Monday night at Beasley Coliseum in Pullman.

“I’ve just been very calm, and catching the ball and looking,” Murekatete said. “I used to take rushed shots, but nothing’s rushing me because they (opponents) still think I can’t shoot. That’s something I worked on in the summer.”

Johanna Teder led four Cougars (5-1) into double figures with 17 points. Charlisse Leger-Walker added 13 points.

“I couldn’t be happier that we held a team like that to 41 points,” WSU coach Kamie Ethridge said. “Especially with how slow things were for us in the first quarter. This is a big win for us, and we need to celebrate it and be happy about it.”

Myah Selland scored seven points for South Dakota State (4-3), which beat Louisville last week.

“We were able to make them take hard shots, and take away what they wanted to do,” Murekatete said.

WSU plays host to Montana on Friday.

No. 23 Gonzaga 62, Maine 43: At Spokane, Kaylynne Truong scored 15 points to lead four Bulldogs into double figures as Gonzaga (6-1) beat the Black Bears (3-4) before 4,602 at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

The Bulldogs collected 85 votes following a strong showing at the Battle 4 Atlantis, which included two top 25 wins in three days. The Zags were last ranked in the poll on March 22, 2021, at No. 13. The highest ranking the Zags have ever reached in the poll was No. 11 in the 2019-20 season.

Brynna Maxwell added 13 points for the Zags. Yvonne Ejim and Eliza Hollingsworth both scored 10 points with Ejim grabbing a team-high eight rebounds. Calli Stokes also recorded a career-high seven rebounds for Gonzaga.

Sarah Talon led Maine with 13 points.

The Zags play at Stephen F. Austin on Thursday and at No. 2 Stanford on Sunday.
