NIC ROUNDUP: Cardinals fall in semifinals of NWAC Championships; to play for third today

LAKEWOOD, Wash. — North Idaho College’s bid for a conference tourney title came up short Saturday when the Cardinals fell to the Columbia Basin Hawks 25-17, 19-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-11 in the semifinals of the Northwest Athletic Conference Championships at Pierce College.

Taylin Rowley, a sophomore from Coeur d’Alene High, had 20 kills and 15 digs for NIC (27-5), will face Bellevue (28-7) today at noon in the third-place match.

Columbia Basin (30-3), which split with NIC during the regular season, advances to play Linn-Benton (33-1) in the championship match today at 3 p.m.

NIC had won 17 of its last 18 matches, last losing against Columbia Basin in four sets in Pasco on Sept. 14.

Abigail Neff, a sophomore from Lakeland High, had 52 assists and 21 digs, freshman Brooklyn Minden of Post Falls 38 digs and freshman Quincy Frohlich 12 kills and five digs for NIC, the champion of the East Regional last weekend in Coeur d’Alene.

Hokulani Sagapolu had 13 kills and 19 digs for Columbia Basin, which finished second in the South Regional.

POWELL, Wyo. — Cobi Campbell, a 6-2 freshman guard from Seattle, had 29 points on 10-of-13 shooting, including 7 of 9 from the 3-point line to lead the Cardinals past the Trappers in the Coach Collins Memorial Classic.

Sophomores Taden King (17 points), Brendan Johnson (13 points) and freshman Kamryn Thomas had 12 points to round out the Cardinals (2-0) in double figures.

“We did a good job of sharing the ball,” said NIC coach Corey Symons, whose team finished with 21 assists. “We’ve got a lot of options and scorers on the team. The guys really did a good job of hitting shots.”

NIC finished 33 of 59 shooting and led by as much as 21.

Campbell had eight rebounds, Xavier Bailey and Julius Mims seven each for NIC, which hosts the Best Western Inn-vitational starting on Friday at 7:30 p.m. against Shoreline.

TWIN FALLS — The Cardinals turned the ball over 28 times in a loss to the Golden Eagles, the ninth-ranked team in the NJCAA poll, in the final game of the Coca-Cola Invitational.

CSI (6-1) outscored NIC (1-1) 29-6 in the second quarter after leading 16-11 after the first quarter.

Kaylee Banks, a sophomore guard from Sandpoint High, had 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting for NIC, which returns to action on Dec. 2 against the visiting Carroll JV.
